PCI express 2.0 in a PCIE slot?

Someone has asked me if a PCI express 2.0 graphics adapter can be used in a PCI express slot. Anyone know?

Uh... What width? x16? In general if it will mechanically plug into the slot it should work electrically.

It'll work fine.

Generally yes but compatibility is not assured. I've not had a problem sticking Radeon 4000-series cards on ancient LGA775 motherboards.

Yup. The general rule with PCIe is the same as USB; if it will fit, it will work (possibly at some lower performance level)
