Has anyone had any experience with Pentamedia products, such as their Pentavision and PentavisionCI cards? A customer of mine asked me about these, and I'd like to get some input about these products.

http://www.pentamedia.com/

Once the site loads, click on the English version, and then click on Products. Under the Products listing, click on Satellite Data Broadcasting Receiving. At the bottom of the following list are the Pent@VISION and Pent@VISION - CI products. Click on the first one and then the second to learn more.

Your opinions are much appreciated.

I don't think those cards would be of any use in the US, as DVB is a Euro/Asian spec. No broadcast in DVB over here AFAIK. I know you can get C-band dishes and the associated hardware/access cards to receive sat in the US (apart from the Dish/DirecTv stuff).

TV: http://www.4dtv.com/
Sat broadband: http://www.cband.net/

When I had wireless broadband in Aus they supplied a haXored DVB receiver card (uplink was via dial up modem). Speeds were great.

Does your client want sat data, or sat video, or both?

Well to access the Direct/Dish channels you would need an access card, and therefore pay a subcription. However there is apparently a thriving haXoring community in Canada that deals in such things. In the US the law comes down hard on such shenanigans. Just ask O.J :) In anycase it doesn't look like that card is capable of HD reception. For SD you could use a DirecTivo, however it's hard to get the video off the machine. Use a Reply which is very easy to get video off. Still it's SD. Or spend $2-3K on a component input capturing card and record HD coming out of an HD box.

With C-band he could get free channels, but he would need the "big dish" and rotator/c-band box.

Either option would definitely be far from free :)
