A friend of mine has this, he'd like to run linux on it but the current ones are too big. He'd like it to reside on the HDD

low end laptop with pentium 2 266mhz 3gb hdd 64mb ram

what about for this

P3-550 w/ 256 mb SDRAM, 40 gb HDD

mostly for surfing and email, some correspondence, office work.

Well... I was able to get some more life out of my old PII 300mhz laptop (64mb ram) using DSL - "Damn Small Linux" - Check out the site... you can run off a CD or install to HD if you would rather....

I am omnipresent
I think you'd be alright with a modern distro like SuSE or Ubuntu... but if you had anything less than 256MB, you'd probably want to use a cut-down distribution.

SuSE 10/Gnome on a PII 400 with 512 MB of RAM is okay, not great, just okay. Gnome won't install on a system with 64 MB of RAM.
