Before we dive into this, it's worth dwelling on a few issues that may be of concern to anyone wanting to actually build one of these things:
  • It's not cheap, but you can use this as a template for building a less pricey system.
  • Availability of the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ -- or any part based on the Toledo core (2 x 1MB L2 cache) is problematic at this time. Availability of the Manchester variant (2 x 512KB) is somewhat better.
  • Similarly, Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX cards are available, but not cheap.
  • Yes, we used that goofy—but fun—Corsair XMS Xpert memory. Hey, we had to have a little bling-bling in the system. Bear in mind that we were able to run the Xpert RAM at CAS 2-2-2-7, with a 1T command rate.
  • The prices we list for all components are based on what we find at sites we trust. You may do better, with some careful searching. Also, we don't take into account shipping costs.
