hey all -
so I get home and plug my laptop into my LAN at home. The link light on my router (Linksys BEFSR41) isn't on for the port I'm using, but is light for the other two PCs on my network. I switch cables and ports, but that doesn't work. The other computer in front of me, attached to the router (and indicated so by the status lights) can't get a webpage up, and can't do a "repair internet connection" in WinXP. I reboot the router, same thing. Leave it unplugged for a minute, same thing. Hit the reboot button, same thing. If I plug a PC into the cable modem directly I can get a connection just fine. It's just that nothing seems to work when plugged into the router, and it seems port #2 is dead (both the status light on the port won't stay on, and my laptop's ethernet status light won't stay on when it's plugged in).

Is this about all the troubleshooting I can do, or did I miss anything? Has anybody seen this sort of thing before?

With the status lights not work with Port #2, that sounds bad. I would try this in the order listed:

1) Shutdown all systems
2) Shutdown or unplug Router
3) Shutdown or unplug Cable Modem
4) Disconnect computer systems from Router
5) Disconnect Router from Cable Modem
6) Wait one minute
7) Connect Router to Cable Modem
8) Power Cable Modem back up or Plug Cable Modem back in
9) Power Router back up or Plug Router back in
10) Wait until Cable Modem has run through its test phase
11) Connect one computer to Router
12) Power computer up
13) If all goes well, continue process with remaining computers

It sounds like you are saying you hav two known good ports and two known good computers. I would use one of the known good computers to test all the ports in the router.

Then use a known good port on the router to test the flakey machine.

you forgot resetting the router... but good ideas both of you...

if these things don't work, then I believe you have exhausted everything... short of actually looking in the RJ45 ports to see if any pins are bent or shorted... (an actual possiblity)
