Hello storage forum,

I have recently bought Hitachi SATA II hard disk with 320 GB @ 7200 RPM and 16 MB buffer memory and it's not recognized in bios. My motherboard is ASUS A7V8X-X which doesnt support SATA II but Hitachi hd's are set by default to function on SATA I mode which is supported by my mobo.

Do you know what can be the problem and what can I do to resolve it?

Thanks,

Bunny.

Welcome to StorageForum.

SATA I vs. II will not cause detection issues; backwards compatibility is not a problem. I would start with verifying that the drives have power and that the data cables are good (try swapping them out). Next I would verify that the BIOS settings are correct (reset them using the jumper on the motherboard). After that I would try them in another system to make sure the drives are good.

Let us know how you get on.

There's definitely some kind of issue between Hitachi drives and SATA-1 controllers - VIA ones, anyway. I have a 500GB Hitachi 7K500 that isn't recognised when connected to a SATA-1 motherboard, but all the ones I've tried use the VIA 8237 so I'm not sure if it's a specific Hitachi/VIA problem or a more general SATA-1/2 one.

FWIW, I've had problems with the 1TB Hitachi drive not working in an SATA I external enclosure, whereas Samsung and WD 1TB drives worked properly. Unfortunately the Hitachi drives have no jumper. I don't know what to tell you, other than try another brand HD or use a PCI controller of some sort.

I heard that it can be by default set to 3.0 gbs speed instead of SATA I speed (1.5), so I will try to change it on my friend's computer and try again..
I will post what happened later.
