SCSI U320 Problems

Hello Colleagues,

I have a server with embedded SCSI U320 and a PCI SCSI U320, I don't use the embedded one .
There are many errors in the Event Log. The errors are related to symmpi driver ( ID: 11. ID:117)
when I disable the embedded SCSI form the BIOS, the errors disappear from the Event log.
What do You think about it.
Is it a driver error?
Is it a hardware defect?
What can I do about it?

Just to be sure I understand:

1. You don't use the embedded SCSI adapter
2. The errors only occur when the embedded SCSI adapter is enabled

Why is it enabled at all?

Yes, the errors in Event Log appear only , when the embedded controller is enabled.
It was enabled by default, but nothing is attached to it.
I don't see a reason this controller to make this errors, although it is not used...

Sometimes one controller can control two SCSI cards at the same time.
IE: install two controller cards, put two hard drives on each controller. During boot up, you would only see one controller boot menu. Entering that menu would show all four hard drives.
Seems your PCI controller is trying to control a different make controller on the motherboard.
Leave the motherboard controller disabled.

I agree with the above -- As the simplest solution, just keep it disabled...

Now, since what you really want is to find out what is going on. If you want help diagnosing, then really far more details need to be supplied, because everything is in the details. Generallities don't cut it. So, There are questions to be asked.



What are the specific error(s) being generated?

What are the makes models of the two adapters with driver versions

Do the errors go away if the PCI adaptor is removed and just the embeded adapter is used?

Do the two adapters share the same LUN? This will produce a potential ID conflict between the controllers or devices.

Is the embeded adaptor properly terminated? If it is enabled and there is no termination (such as no auto termination and nothing is plugged into it) then it will produce SCSI errors...

Colleagues,
I think the reason is the missing termination on the embedded controller.
I'm not sure, that if the channels of the controller are not attached, these must be terminated. But it sounds logical, because the errors are Time out errors with the symmpi driver ( this is a system driver for SCSI ).
I'm pleased that I can find support hear...
