I have installed Server 2008 R2 on my work PC. For some reason the screen saver and monitor shutdown do not work. I spent a couple of hours Googling for answers but have come up empty.
I am beginning to believe that a patch or update has hosed the screen saver.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I checked Group Policy, but I'll look again.

A clean install didn't fix the problem either.

The monitor won't shut off after a given time.

Strange

More strange happenings: this problem is happening on two different computers. A Pentium4 and a Core 2 Duo.
Also, I can't get into Safe mode on either computer. I press F8 during boot up, select Safe Mode, wait for the CTRL-Alt-Del login, and when I try to log in, the system reboots. This happens on both computers.

Both computers were loaded with the trail version from MS.

I downloaded 2008 R2 three times from MS. All installs were borked.

I went to a different source for the fourth download, and everything is working fine!

Go figure :-?

Speaking of screen savers, I did just find that if I stick the 3Dpipes.scr file in my system32 folder, it runs just fine, even on versions of Windows that don't come with 3dpipes. This made me happy.

Why would anyone use a screen saver nowadays? An LCD monitor should enter standby to preserve the lifespan.

X2 on the monitor standby. It actually annoys me that my Samsung LN32A550 wont turn off when the computer tells it to, just displays loss of input. There's probably a setting somewhere in the TV that needs to be changed but I am pretty good about turning it off if I am going to walk away for any time.

My work computer has a group policy that turns on a password protected screen saver every 5 minutes so I have a reg file to blow that stupid nonsense away once and a while, man that is so annoying.

For you Boso I think they borked the eval.

Hmmm...The P4 computer is working fine. The Core 2 Duo computer still won't start the screen saver or shut off the monitor.

Why a screen saver on a server and/or an LCD monitor? From my cube I can see the screen savers running on our Process Control computers. If I see a black screen, thats trouble.

I found the problem. I needed to install the MS drivers for my MS wireless mouse. This was on the Core 2 Duo computer. :dunno:
The P4 computer uses a wired mouse.

I dealt with a system on Friday where the printer drivers had to be installed in a particular order or the Print Spooler service would fail to start.

The system had five local printers, including two parallel port printers (Oki ML320 and a Zebra label printer) and one serial printer (barcode printer).

Weird shit still happens sometimes.
