I've always enjoyed reading reviews and op pieces at Dan's Data, and this one is certainly no exception.

His slashdot post was frickin hallarious (link in article).

The apple paradoy, to which he also linked, was bonafide A+ material. Jack Russell terrier ... love it :D

I've always loved Dan's Data too. It's the most caustic, most awesome, geeky humour on the net these days IMO --not to mention that the guy is genuinely intelligent and can use google like no man I have ever seen. Combine that with his intolerance for idiocy and you've got an author that regularly produces a damn entertaining read. Of course he regularly resorts to comic relief by exploiting various (go to the last letter), alternate sources (the last reference is to a good old-fashioned perpetual motion device Dan explores in this column). I've learned to always follow the references he compulsively supplies and often they're hilarious. When they're not, they're usually genuinely informative.

The fact that he's polluted my mind with so much random crazi-ness is a necessary side effect that I'm willing to tolerate.

Of course I'm one of those people that agrees that thing's like sparkler bombs are really just fine and harmless. Tender people might be unable to endure his sense of humour. I honestly think the man is ushering in a new era of satire and humour. He exemplifies everything that is the internet. In fact, I actually think he might be the reborn incarnation of the BOFH.

Besides, in this day and age, anyone who laughs at legal threats is a blessing. I'm tempted to go on linking all the great stuff you can find all over that warren that is his site (It's a miniature internet --the only practical way to navigate it is through google with site:www.dansdata.com "x +y +z"), but I'll just stop now.

I hope I did the man justice... :).

Aah, Gilbo, welcome! Yea, you certainly did Dan justice, with almost as many links in your message as he is wont to put in his web pages! The reason I don't visit Dan's is that I end up spending all day clicking on every link and don't get anything done!

The man has an intelligence, humor and grasp of the language that is hard to find on the Internet.

In general I find that Australians have a broader vocabulary base then Americans, and a more colorful way of expressing themselves. This seems to be the case with the English, or I’m just a buffoon and have been spell bound by their accents.

Went to a wedding last weekend where the grooms parents read some stuff. I swear I could have listened to them read the phonebook and it would have been entertaining. They were from Nova Scotia.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

Howell, I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm originally from Ontario and have lived out here for several years now, and I still love the accent. You should hear Cape Bretoners talk, if the Nova Scotians you heard weren't from there anyway. They're Nova Scotians, but they take the accent to a whole other level. It's one of the greatest accents in the world, and it's a shame so few people have heard it IMHO. The fact that Cape Bretoners drink and fight like crazy people adds to the overall appeal too.

Bartender, I'll point you to Propeller. Their Extra Special Bitter is the beer closest to my heart --luckily the brewery is close to my home as well :). I haven't seen it (the beer, not the brewery ) anywhere outside of Nova Scotia really. It's a seriously flavourful beverage, but not as heavy in the stomach as you might expect from something so dark. After Propeller Bitter, I'm a Moosehead man. Moose Green or Moose Red usually (those are the lager and the pale ale respectively -- moose green isn't really green :-?; people refer to them by the colours of their labels).

I vaguely remember ddrueding declaring his affection for Moosehead as well at some point, but I might be way off base with that.

Excellent! Gilbo's joined SF. For those of you who haven't been following SR for a while, Gilbo has been one of the impressive newcomers in the past year or two. Every now and then a new poster comes along and rekindles the spirit of the old SR. Gilbo impressed me with his substance in many of his early posts. I once strove to provide that myself when I was still new at SR. After many of the veterans left for SF, I lost a lot of my motivation to rise to the occasion post after post. In late 2003 / early 2004, Gilbo was the guy who inspired me to raise my game a couple times and enjoy a wonderful in depth discussion on desktop usage patterns, benchmarking, and RAID. I haven't felt compelled to do that in some time. Thanks, Gilbo. And welcome.

I shall now go back to my sporadic and infrequent posting schedule...

Hear, hear! I think all of us SR old-timers can relate to that.

Aww. :(

Gilbo has been with us for a while....of course, he was posting under the pretense of his alter ego (and as self admitted in this thread)....So Gilbo, did you forget Gilbot's password, or is this just a case of sock puppet envy? :D

You mean Gilbolt? Gilbot sounds like something in the 'bot family. :)

I should have remembered since he asked about CF tripods. The multitude of user names here and at SR are so confusing I cannot keep track. Hell, I almost forget my old SR name used for so many years. :)

Thank you for the kind introduction E_dawg. I'm grateful.

Ah yes, good old Gilbolt, as many of as you are, no doubt, aware, one should never try and slip anything past CityK :).

I did indeed forget the Gilbolt password. I swear, when I tried to register initially, Gilbo was already in use (I may have registered it some time ago and forgotten --would an unused account expire?). Of course, I just retried it and here I am. I think I only posted twice under Gilbolt, but I certainly intend to pass a little more time here now that I have gotten hold of my proper name. I have to say that I am looking forward, in particular, to relaxing a little in a Pub which is not dominated by political debate ;).

Incidentally, and rather OT:
I'm posting this from a Knoppix session (I cannot possibly do the Knoppix CD justice --I can't think of a more useful CD).

The boot disk in my computer just imploded rather thoroughly unfortunately. Let's all have a moment of silence for an original Western Digital Caviar 36400. A 5400 RPM Caviar... Who would have thought that after 3 years of SMART warnings the thing would finally give out, and without a single bad sector too. One boot, all is well. A quick restart, and the whole thing is hosed. I can't get a single sector off it. It figures; I had just started to trust the damn thing again.

Of course, as a good storage afficiando all my data is safely backed up elsewhere. I did lose a rather nice bookmark tree in Firefox though :( ... and a wardrobe that was getting very respectable...

Indeed, I was rather impressed with my Knoppix CD once upon a time. Unfortunately, the version I have does not support the nForce2 motherboard Ethernet adapters (at least on the 2 nForce2 boards that I have... I think it recognized the Realtek chip on my nForce1 board, though), so I can't do anything with my current desktops.

I do recall having problems getting it to play nicely with NTFS volumes and CD burners, though. And forget about RAID card support as well since you can't install drivers if you're running knoppix off a CD.

I did have to resort to failsafe mode to get it to boot on my system. I don't know enough to be able to diagnose why it failed to mount the Knoppix filesystem (the specific error I got) using the 2.4 and 2.6 versions. I was getting quite worried for a little bit but failsafe pulled through with full system functionality.

The NTFS support in the version I'm using (3.6) appears to be very good. I think that read support for NTFS in Linux is quite complete now. It can even read NTFS compressed files, which is nice for my current situation. I think its only remaining limitations at this stage are NTFS encryption, security information, and quotas.
