Very random topic, but I wanted to share a good find for those who may be trying to lose some weight. I've been on a diet now for several months and through word of mouth I was told that skinny cows ice cream was great. I've been eating these things often and I have lost 30 Lb's so far. (skinny cows isn't my diet) ;)

So I went out and bought some of the ice cream sandwiches and I have to admit, they taste awesome! If you like mint ice cream, you might want to try the mint skinny cows ice cream sandwich, you'd never know it was low fat. The next time you're at the store and you want some ice cream, give them a chance, I think you might be surprised.

I would say that it tastes "awesome," but certainly not bad. Sort of like Two-Buck Chuck.

I thought it tasted awesome only because I had a bad expectation knowing that most low fat food items rarely, if ever, taste good.

yup, my wife brings some home every now and then.

So my little student group had a recent journal club session on Atkins. Actually, we had two, come to think of it, but at the time of the first one there really wasn't any good data. As skeptical as I am, I really can't object too loudly to any diet method that ends up cutting calories (which is what explains the magnitude of weight lost in both studies reported in Annals of Internal Medicine). The fear of really horrible cholesterol and poor diabetic control, while logical, just don't seem to happen (in fact, upon seeing the LDL's, HDL's, TG's I was impressed, but when I got to the A1c's reported in table 3 of the Stern 1-year paper my jaw literally dropped). The verdict on long-term kidney disease is still out, and the data out to 1-year looks less impressive vs. a low-fat (Weight Watchers-style) than at 6 months. Whatever works, works.

The new Ben & Jerry's more love-less handle ice creams are pretty good. Had some New York Super Fudge Chunk last night.

As to the health effects of low-carb diets, one thing they never say when criticizing Atkins-type diets is that you don't have to eat a lot of fat. You can go low carb and stay relatively low fat quite easily. Trim your meat. Done. Yawn. You also don't cut out all veggies; just certain ones like potatoes and beets that have a lot of starch/sugar. Every time I see a report criticizing the diet methodology it is always based on the most superficial glance at the diet itself, like assuming you never leave the induction phase. If I have one legit issue with the diet, it's the lack of fruit. But then, besides a glass of OJ I've never been a big fruit eater anyway.

My blood pressure is borderline high; has been for ages. Well, my doc and I are now trying to combat this so I can avoid getting on BP meds. So I tried reducing my sodium input. It worked to a degree but I was not happy as a low sodium diet (<2000mg/day) is very hard to achieve w/o many many sacrifices and changes in eating habits (that I knew wouldn't work long term). Also, the slightest variation and my BP would jump back to the borderline. So we're changing tactics and trying to lose some weight. If I can shed enough weight, my BP should come down on its own. 12 pounds in the past few weeks and holding so far; this is the first plateau. I hope to crack it soon and start dropping more.

And I'm trying to add more exercise to my routine. Even light things like a long walk are better than nothing so we're trying to exhaust our dog in the local forest preserve. She could also stand to shed a pound or two. I'm debating a piece of home exercise equipment and am open to suggestions. I'd prefer a weight system to a treadmill.

Other simple steps to better health:
- Don't eat unless you're hungry. You don't have to always have meals at regimented times.
- Drink lots of water.
- Take a multivitamin every day.
- Don't eat within 3 hours of bedtime. If you must, eat something light like some raw veggies - celery seems to be the best.
- Don't keep many, or any, snack foods around the house. You can't do the "mindless munch" if the stuff isn't available. I've found that if I have the will power to resist it for that hour/week in the store, I don't have to worry about having the will power to resist it at home. Besides, snack foods are among the most expensive items at the grocery; reduce them and you'll save $.
- Eat the occasional salad for lunch. Not every day; you'll burn out pretty fast. Just once or twice a week. Use a lite dressing or use less. BTW, for low-carbing, ignore the reduced carb salad dressings except for Thousand Island; normal dressings have very few carbs to begin with. RTFLabel.
- If you drink soda, switch to something without caffeine. Switch to something without sugar if you can, but my doc advised the caffeine is actually worse (for me) than the sugar. I've settled on Caffeine-free Diet Coke or Diet Sprite. At home I mostly drink water or Crystal Light lemonade.

I do most of those things. I drink a can of sugared, caffiene-free soda (usually a Pepsi) in the morning and a can of something diet in the afternoon.
I've also found that by combining a can of something in the diet, lemon-lime vein (Sierra Mist, Sprite, 7Up) in 32oz. container, I get nearly the same flavor - pretty much the same as the watery drinks served in fast food places - and I'm drinking far less soda.

One HUGE problem I have is attempting to cook for myself. I *like* to cook. I'm pretty good at it, even. But it borders on impossible to get portion sizes anything even close to right, so I wind up doing something like making a pot of chili and eating it every day for a week.
This leads to problem #1: I tend to look forward to, and eat large lunches (e.g. a salad from Wendy's and a cheeseburger), 'cause I'm sick of whatever I have at home.
... and the related problem: If I get TOO sick of eating the same thing all the time, and I don't want to invest the time in making too much or too little of something while cooking for myself, I'll spend several weeks eating out every meal. Which gets boring, too, since there aren't THAT many decent places to eat around my home... and then I go through a few days of eating frozen dinners, which gets old fastest of all.

Fushigi,

The problem with a low-carb diet is the same that exists with other legitimate dietary changes -- people misapply the treatment. The craze was having a 'low fat' diet. Many people didn't just trim out the fat, they began indulging in a high carbohydrate diet. Look at all of the snack foods or prepackaged foods! They're usually 'low in fat' but packed full of carbohydrates. Most people don't turn to veggies or fruits for a snack. Thus, we end up with a society in general that has trimmed out the fat and overindulged in carbohydrates. So, a new fad comes along, 'low carb diet'. What do many people do? They cut out the carbs and begin indulging if fatty foods -- especially the nasty kinds! Most people don't start increasing the amount of salmon they eat, they start eating more hamburgers.

The remedy to all of this has always been balance and discipline -- this seems to be the hardest diet of all.

I read about Mumia Jamal a while back. The man is guilty as sin, yet people love jumping on a nice tear-jerking, racially-hot, celebrity-endorsed (hey, if Jessica Simpson says the guys not guilty, then he must not be!) case of police brutality that happens to be poorly-reported news story.

Merc - Make the big pot of chili but then divide it up and freeze it for later consumption. Buy a chest/upright freezer if need be. Get the disposable Tupperware-type things that are cheap and common. Fill each one with one meal's worth of food and you've got portion control in addition to spreading the meals out to add variety.

Re: Ben Cohen. I've never heard of the case before this but I seriously doubt Mr. Cohen would truly want a cop killer on the streets. From the limited info on that page, which is hardly the most objective source, it would seem he believes that Mr. Cook may be guilty but did not receive a fair trial. I don't think I can fault him for going with the word of a former USAG. It is also possible, although I don't know, that Mr. Cohen does not support the death penalty and would want a mis-trial for Mr. Cook and any others on Death Row to see about altering their sentences to Life w/o Parole instead. Without more info I can't make a judgement.

The issue is that people want their food to taste good, and only "bad" stuff tastes really good. So, if you cut fat, you end up eating more sugar. If you cut carbohydrates, you end up eating more fat.

People continue to fail to understand that if you want to lose weight, you must eat fewer calories.

Having lived in Pennsylvania, I ended meeting a lot of people who were very passionate about this guy, and I don't get it. Either the guy is guilty or insane, but he doesn't purport to be insane.

Yup. It is a very simple equation, if you take in more calories then you burn, you'll gain weight. I once used a calorie-counting diet, and it worked remarkably well. Although, it should be noted, that the items you eat should be healthy (e.g. low in fat and sugar) -- but that is obvious too.

The liver is amazing as it serves as the center of our metabolism process. But if you never let your metabolism pass the 'fed' stage, it just keeps storing and storing, waiting for that 'fasting' stage.

Fushigi-

The fastest way to burn calories is to run. You can run anywhere, and at just about any time of the year. Treadmills are not fun. Since you are not actually moving it feels like you aren't actually moving and you will just continually look at how far you have gone or how long you have run. In addition, the sweat will just pool on you because there is no air flow from moving. So if you want to burn the maximum amount of calories in the minimum amount of time then I would say start running. Also if anyone tells you that you need to take a day off in between they are wrong, calves and abs can be worked everyday without a break. I run 5 days a week with no problems.

In pain. I was running 2 miles every couple of days, and the pain just became to great, so I've been resting them for over a week. I think it is time to get them limber again and start jogging again.

My knees were bothering me when I started running, but I saw a sports trainer and he gave me a bunch of stretches to do that really helped. He also told me to do squats to strengthen my upper legs. Haven't really had any problems lately.

This is what I've been doing and I've lost 30lb's. I'm not on any low carb diet...just watching calories and trying to eat better. I try to consume about 1600 calories a day or less. I only drink soda about 2-3 servings a month. I'll sometimes have juice, but it's mostly water for me.

I haven't had any ice cream in 6 months. I have to write notes to myself to remember to eat dinner. Merc, you got any leftovers.

There's a sub/pizza shop by my house that has 20" subs. I managed to get through one in a sitting and felt sick for two days. I'm the only customer they've ever had who has finished one inside the restaurant. I think they put my name on a plaque or something. It was kind of a big deal.

That guy makes a sandwich with 8 hamburger patties, 8 sausages, a 1/4 lb. of chicken breast and an enchilada and finishes it in under 24 hours? That guy is a god.

I can't even eat what's considered a normal meal in one shot. Generally, when I get a lunch special (main dish, soup, egg roll) at one of the local Chinese takeouts I'll make two meals out of it. I tend to eat a lot of smaller meals over the course of a day rather than three larger ones.

That 8500 calorie sandwich would probably have lasted me a good week. I get sick just thinking of eating it in one shot.
