Definitely not as enjoyable places anymore - and perhaps haven't been for a while (possibly the reason why many of you now frequent SR quite seldomly, if at all anymore in some cases?).

Nonetheless, in the more recent past, I believe that there has been a definite shift in the atmosphere, quality of discussions, and over all tone of conversation. Attributable to winter (northern hemisphere)? State of world politics and tensions? Greater numbers on SR? Post Christmas?holiday blues?

I don't know, but I don't like it. No sir, I don't like it all. Its getting tiresome and circular.

sigh...just sounding off.

I think it has been at least 6 months since I last posted at SR. It's very sad that it's worked out that way, but everything you say above is why I simply stopped going there.

SR's forums are created by those that frequent them. If everyone who now posts here had posted instead on SR's, it's possible they wouldn't be in the state they're in now.

Not that I think it's a problem worth fixing.

I slip over there every now and then to post a bit, and at least glance at the thread listing more days than not, but I seem to go in phases - on for a month or so, off for another month or so. Lately, the "off" phases seem to be getting gradually longer. It does seem to me that the standard of discussion has slipped over time, but I think that there is a great deal more to it than that. First, you guys are here, so I come here too. Second, I confess to being less and less interested in the minutiae of hard drive performance as the years roll by (or computer performance in general, come to that), and the main part of SR is thus less and less relevant to me. Even here, Tea and I have become pretty much off-topic specialists, and the off-topic area at SR (the B&G) is moribund.

I rarely visit SR's B&G forum anymore. I posted twice on two threads recently, but generally, I don't even bother reading it. The Computer forum, on the other hand, is still a fine place to be IMO. More action than here, although the overall quality isn't up to our standard. There again, we have few computer novices here.

That's okay Tony, the world still needs humour.

Ageed. Personally, I liked sifting through the [OT] and computer discussions on the old board...where else would you find a thread on acctuaters sandwiched right between "An apology to China" and a slight on the Canadian Armed Forces?

Cougtek said:

More action/traffic definitely. But I think its starting to approach critical mass....for example, occasionally I take a peak at AVSforums, but its enough to make your head spin and the "noise" factor is extremely high. All in all, it doesn't make for a particularly enjoyable experience.

Quality wise, the standard is dropping...dully noted in the comments

I partially agree. For me, I still derive utility from it because I have a lot to learn in regards to computers. However, the amount that I am extracting from it is dropping....Moreover, even withstanding the large influx of spoon-fed-loving novice users (who just can't seem to figure out how to use the search button or perform a google search), and the exodus of aged knowledgable users, its the tone/attitude that the new breed is/has adopted that is also largely contributing to the drop in substance and quality. Its like a family resturant was changed into a Burger King, yet now its not even a sit down B.K, its become a drive-thru kiosk. And this is the point I was trying to get across in my initial post; I have noticed all the aforementioned changes before, but the rate of change was more gradual. Recently, however, the pace has quickened.

There is a certain element to

, but largely, I'm still interested in knowledge, often just for knowledge sake itself. So, overall, I don't think my comments go unfounded.

Yes, it is....alas, all things are fleeting and come to an end sometime. I have no idea what forums at Anandtech or the lot are like, but I suspect SR's are starting to take their shape.

I'll visit SR on the odd occassion, but mostly I'm interested in the latest reviews for HDDs. For some reason, I don't read the review, I just click through the graphs, and in particular, look for Server Performance and Legacy Performance. The B&G has turned into a place I would rather not visit, and I believe that the Bartender has similar feelings.

The last I saw of that place several months ago, the S.R. Discussion Forums were a ghetto -- not too much different than any of the other numerous enthusiast/nerd computer hardware forums scattered across the Internet.

I kind of go in spurts with SR like Tannin does. One or twice a month there is some topic(usually in the B&G) that engages me for a couple of days, and then it's back to the usual one or two posts a week. By and large, though, the quality of discussion isn't what it once was, which is why I save my better posts for SF.

If I didn't like it here, I wouldn't bother showing up -- which I don't anywhere else except on UseNet every once in a blue moon (looking out window now for the moon).

Anyway, in my *real* life, I can get seriously bogged down for weeks at a time, as in so bogged down that I might get about 4~5 hours of sleep each day instead of the usual 6 hours until that set of "projects" are reduced. ("Projects" being work, scholastic, and non-work projects.) I'm presently at work.

PS: I just figured out why my icons are not showing up. When I get home I'll re-upload them. Argh.

Given the nature of the images (seriously gross), I think it might be better if that link was moderated - not to remove it, just to make it more than a simple matter of one-click, then retch.

You're right, I suppose my disclaimer wasn't enough.

(b) I saw, I clicked, I vomited.

(c) Well, OK, I didn't vomited. No need to waste a perfectly good slice of chocolate cake. But I thought about it.

*Not for the squeamish*

Thankfully, I didn't notice that thread on SR. And even more thankfully, I wasn't eating when I viewed it just now. :crap:

SR seriously needs some moderation. And the jerk that posted that garbage should apply for a guest slot on The Jerry Springer Show instead of defiling SR.

SR is a shell of it's former self these days, especially the B&G.

EDIT: by Jake the Dog. link to hardcore shock image removed.

I just clicked that link and now I hope for my eyes to recover after I stabbed them with a fork several dozen times to remove that image. :crap:

I found your counter-strike remark to be very timely since I fired up the game last night for the first time in many moons. It was fun to play with my Braille keyboard. All the colorful language people have make for an interesting game.

I noticed the thread, but like most threads with such descriptive titles, I ignored it. Later on, just before beddy-by time, I glanced at the listings and saw that Mickey posted something in the thread...thinking it might not be a bad thread after all if he was posting something, I unfortunately clicked....Oh the sickening horror...went out and took the dog around the block to let the cold erase that one from my mind.

Other crap starting up at SR: I've seen a couple of merchants/vendors whose posts are thinnly veiled marketing ploys.
