So, I'm enter a professor that appreciates suits for the right occasion. My trusty black suit has served me well, and I've so far had enough shirt/ties combos to make it work for most formal events. It is likely that I'm going to be spendinga month at another institution that values the suit greatly - in fact, I will likely be wearing a suit every day, which is a major change from what I'm doing now - scrubs every day, and dressy=a white t-shirt underneath rather than a colored one. Anyway, I'm guessing the single black suit will need to be supplimented with a second, and maybe even a third. I'd like to just get a second, since I'm not exactly flush with cash. What do you guys think about for suit #2? Preferences? Gray? Blue? Brushed aluminum?

Oh, for those curious, here's a hint: the city has two major employers; the one I'm going to likely spend some time with, and Big Blue.

I have a feeling you might be in Rochester. My friend worked in Rochester for about a year before getting transferred to Chicago, which he was pretty happy about.

Go for gray, it can be worn with most shirts/ties.

Yeah, gray with brown patches on the elbows, like the very tasteful british suits.

I hope I'll never have to wear a suit, but if I would, it would be either black or dark gray.

Tip : Stretched white pants are no longer in fashion.

Rochester, MN is correct.

There is one program, general surgery at Duke that still requires their interns to wear a short white coat with white pants.

Yup, Rochester . . . and you'll be working for the Mayo Clinic. There used to be another big employer there, WD, but they closed down their SCSI division and their technical support location.

Must you wear a suit or can it be a combination? Let's say black dress slacks (wool combo) and nice hounds-tooth or tweed sport coat? For suits, I would stay away from black, except for formal occassions. Gray is nice, but can be a bit blah. Blue can be good . . . some come with faint red or tan stripes. Some earth tones are good too.

Not exactly what you can afford, but visit this link for ideas: http://www.brooksbrothers.com/men/landing_men.tem

Also, if you wear laced shoes, wear dress slacks that are not cuffed. If they're loafer-type, wear cuffed slacks.

Wearing shirts with French Cuffs is nice (if you have cuff links). They're pretty reasonable at Macy's.

Nope, not working for Mayo, but indirectly paying to work/learn at Mayo. I'm considering them for residency, and want to get a good look since they seem to have a distinct culture that rubs some people the wrong way. The other major employer in Rochester is IBM. WD was there, but I don't think they were ever close to Mayo and IBM in employees.

Sport coat should be acceptable on some days, and I really should get another sport coat. But I think suits will be the safer bet.

I wear laced shoes with my formal clothes, but I much prefer cuffs. Straight pants just seem hick to me, unless you're going pretty informal.

French cuffs - probably a little too flashy. Plus, if you take your coat off you look like a pirate. Not a bad thing, unless you're at Mayo.
