Oh, I believe you. It was actually painfull to hear her speak on NPR a while ago.

That is the problem with a dark horse; no one has done any decent background on her until you are stuck with her.

Politics aside, I simply can't vote for this woman. She speaks out of her rear 90% of the time.
Like there was any risk of that happening anyhow. You would vote for Obama no matter who was on the Republican ticket.

So, last night I had a one on one class and all I knew about it was that the lady wanted to make a short DVD presentation.

Turns out the person was seriously a big deal for what she does. She was a Wycliffe Bible Translator. I've HEARD of Wycliffe, but only in the context of it being a front that's used for spies rather than anyone actually translating the Bible.

Anyway, this woman went down to Papua New Guinea and spent 24 years in the Jungle learning their languages so that she could make a Bible for them. The Bible part is kind of yucky to me but she's literally the person who decided what their written language was going to be like.

She has all these professionally produced documentaries about her that are on, like, The Jebus channel every once in a while. She's been on the 700 Club 40 times in her life.

I'm helping her take just short clips from all this stuff to make a five minute presentation. I'm kind of getting the vibe that she's a super-wacky bible thumper. I get through all the editing and transitions and titles and crap and it's finally time to make the DVD, which can take a lot of processing time.

So I tell her that it'll be a while and that we just need to hang out for a while.

She says "Do you follow politics at all?"

And this is pretty much a red flag bad touch kind of thing, but I'm bored enough to say "Yeah, I've been following the election news really closely."

She looks me square in the eye, pauses for just a second "I think Sarah Palin is the stupidest C _ _ _ that has ever walked the face of the Earth."

I busted out laughing and finally said "Well, I don't think I can argue with that."

Now, to Stereodude's point, the only thing I'm going to say is that the Katie Couric interview with Palin is one of the most painful things I've ever seen. Your candidate was pwnt by KATIE FUCKING COURIC, a woman whose credentials as a journalist are about as solid as my skills as a ladies man. And not just once, no, she was tripped up REPEATEDLY. How do you expect a person who can be ripped a new one by someone only a half-step better than Larry King, to face off with, say Vladimir Putin?

Sarah Palin *is* a problem. Not just because of her ignorant personal beliefs (she is, after all, a woman who wasn't willing to provide kits to rape victims), but because she has the same fundamental intellectual issues as the scumbag who is presently in office, and that's patently obvious to anyone who has ever heard her speak.

Both the National Review and the New Republic have published articles in favor of ditching Palin. Both are hard-right (hard, hard, hard, HARD-right for our non-US memebers) publications serving the thin veneer of intellectualism on that exists on that side of the US political spectrum: basically the republicans who can actually read rather than getting all their information from Fox News and Talk Radio.

That's a pretty serious vote of no confidence.

Wow, I barely speak english and I don't follow politics much these days, but I could have answered it better than she did. At 72, there would be considerable chances that McCain wouldn't make it untill the end of his first mandate. I never thought it possible, but now I think there's a chance G.W. Bush will have competition as United States' worst president ever.

You gotta have some cynical sense to vote republican if you're American.

Whomever the next US President is, there is essentially ZERO chance that they will have anything that could be so strongly phrased as a "mandate" to hold office. The US electorate is sharply divided between two partisan groups and a middle so apathetic that they can't even be bothered to vote. I very strongly suspect that we'll see another 50.5% to 49.5% election with everything being decided, once again, by a single state.

I guess I'm the apathetic middle then. Honestly, I think whoever gets elected will be a disaster for the US. McCain will try to gut things like public transportation exactly at a time when we need them to get us off oil. He might involve us in yet another war the US can't afford, this time with Iran. Obama and a Democratic Congress on the other hand will do what they usually do whenever the Democrats think they're in control, which is start to pass the worst parts of the leftist agenda. That includes the huge black hole called national health care as well as fringe issues irrelevant/offensive to 99% of the electorate such as gay marriage. This combination of higher taxes plus social engineering is sure to send the US deeper into a recession. Both parties will ignore good economic policy such as balanced budgets, growing the economy by getting rid of the income tax, seriously reexamining entitlements/getting rid of the worst ones like Medicaid, building much needed modern public transportation infrastructure, putting alternate sources of energy into use, etc. Instead, they will distract the public with the usual nonsense issues like abortion, stem-cell research, gun control, each other's illicit affairs, whatever, while they slowly tighten their grip on power and pick what's left of the bones of this once great country clean to enrich their cronies. I don't vote because no party is even close to having a coherent policy which makes sense any more. Both have gotten so dogmatic you might as well call Republicans and Democrats leaders of two religions. And speaking of religion, I don't need to hear "God Bless America" following every major Presidential address. I don't care what the leaders of this country believe in private but their religions have no business influencing public policy or being part of public speeches. If I wanted to live in a theocracy I'd move to Saudi Arabia. Not voting does have one very positive benefit however-I don't have to worry about getting called for jury duty any more.

May the Republic fall while I'm still young enough to appreciate it! Nothing short of a revolution is going to make any difference I'm afraid.

I don't like Palin and I haven't seen the interview you refer to but if I had to imagine Palin came across as unprepared. But Katie Couric is well know as an interviewer who will ambush you. She is not a kitten.

I'm concerned what Putin would do to Obama. You don't have to know why you are saying no to say no. I'm concerned BO could be manipulated too easily.

I just can't resist quoting you, now that you've seen the video.

I see it now, It's all Katie's fault with that hard hitting go for the throat journalistic style. She is a couger...:jumpin:

For quite a few years now, Republican presidents have been notable for extraordinary communication skills alied with deeply questionable understanding of what's going on around them - GW Bush is a classic example of this. Palin seems to be cast in the same mould. Err ... except for the communication skills part, that is.

Yes I am, Mubs. GWB has a wonderful speaking voice and manner: relaxed and friendly, enough homespun wisdom in there to drown a cat with, just a hint of steel underneath ... he does it brilliantly. Obviously, there isn't a great deal of actual understanding underneath, and what there is is often so misguided and greedy it's downright terrifying, but the presentation suggests the best president since ... oh. I don't know, FDR maybe. And in a world that values form over substance, that's often all you need to get the job, it seems.

Tannin,

I would agree with you, that he is so eloquent that he makes it even more obvious that he doesn't actually know anything, but the accent ruins it completely. He just sounds clueless.

There are actual regional American accents. Texas has one, and both Bush's have a slight case. Supposedly Oregon and Washington, the Pacific NW states where I live, have a subtle one too, but I can't hear it. Now I can definately hear the accent from the various states of stupid. I have heard that one from Ronald Regan; GWB; Palin; and unfortunately, I hear it in McCain too.

I don't like the Texas mentality either, but I wouldn't go as far as to imply that there are no intelligent people in Texas. AMD's headquarters are in Austin, Texas and our own Gary is from Houston. That's at least two noteworthy spots.

I'm not saying that there aren't any intelligent people in the south/southwest; the odds against that are quite low. I'm just saying that they are in sufficiently short supply to create a very strong stereotype.

In his intelligent, eloquent, southern drawllll....pointing that infamous hand/finger jesture of authority (great liar of all US presidents)...""I said that I did not have a sexual relationship with that woman, and I stand by the truth of that statement," Clinton told reporters." (monica baby).

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/29649

""We did not, I repeat, not, have a mere sexual relationship. What the two of us shared that fateful year we spent in each other's arms was so much more than that."":diablo: :p

Clinton could sell ice cream to the eskimos in the dead of the coldest Siberian winters...and a lot of SF members too, I suspect.

edit: ^^^sorry, I meant mentally 'challenged' :p, prior post

Mentally disabled is mentally disabled. Stupid is stupid. You are not allowed to discriminate based on disability, but I can certainly fire you for being stupid.

He's from Texas, and not a part of Texas that is known for intelligence, if there were such a part. In fact, none of the states that border Texas are known for their intelligence.
Actually, he's from New England, just like his father. Remember Kennebunkport? Lovely little town.

I don't know where he gets that accent, but it isn't the same one that his father and brother have.
