Ok...

I feel very left-out. Confused. What the heck is StorageForum.net and how come I'm the last one to hear about it?

An offshoot of SR? How come we need two forums? How come I had an account waiting for me here? Posts, even?

Somebody please tell me what's going on!

I went through a great deal of trouble to contact you. Friday, March 22 2002 I finally did. You visited, posted a couple of times and didn't come back.
I don't know why either.

Piyono,

You registered here more than a year ago. One would guess you should know about the place. Tut tut tut, hamster memory :p.

StorageForum was created as a place to go after StorageReview was about to close-up shop a little over a year ago. At no point did we share user-data with SR. My assumption is that you were invited, or found out about us, in the beginning, created an account, and then forgot sometime later. I would really be surprised that someone other than you created an account for you here with a password that you currently know. Don't forget that the account was verified with your Email address too. It would be just too unlikely to be plausable: More likely you simply forgot about us over the past year.

but... but... but...!

Man, my memory has gone to the dawgs!
I remember the whole SR fiasco, but I don't remember signing up here, even after reading my posts. Has the look changed considerably since here since this place opened shop?

How do all you guys juggle two nearly identical forums? Why?

Smaller crowd. High signal to noise.

Some members (James, iGary) don't visit SR any more. Some (honold, Mickey) spend more time there than here. Some (Pradeep) seem to divide their time in half.

I'm moving this thread to the Pub, BTW.

Welcome back piyono! :)

Yes, this site has changed considerably since you last visited and since it has opened.

Interesting, Piyono's "gap" in memory. Maybe the aliens erased it?

The L.A. times recently had an article about a rainmaker. It has been proven that he has made rain every place he visitied, and has broken droughts. He failed only twice. He refused to talk about one of those failures, but for the other, said there was "interference". Upon pressing him, he said the ETs don't like it when he alters the weather, because with clouds they are unable to monitor us, and so they try to sabotage him. Before the flames begin, keep in mind that I read the story not in a tabloid, but in the L.A. times. Doesn't of course mean that they're 100% right, but we're not talking about The Inquirer here.

I lurked at SR from their inception, and registered there a little before the crash. I was away from the U.S. between Aug. 2001 and Aug 2002, with occassional low-speed dial-up being my only access available, which precious time I used mainly for email. A few times I did manage to visit SR, and learned of the then impending closure of the site. Didn't have a clue about this one, though. Merc, I'm hurt that you didn't try to contact me :(

Browsing SR frequently on my return (with broadband - yes!) turned up a comment by Tannin. Upon inquiry, he was kind enough to explain, and heeer I am.

Initially we wanted to add users slowly, and we didn't want SR's admins to think we were competing or "cherry picking". I contacted a group of maybe 15 or 20 people to visit our site initially. There's a long list of folks I remember from "the old SR" whom I wish would drop by this site, if only to see what we've done here.

Who knows? Maybe they have.

He hasn't been back to reply in over two days. Me thinks he lost the site again.

Why would they want to do that?

Odd concordance:

SR, right now, has
95695 posts (probably 15% of them from the 10 or so most prolific posters)
12948 users

SF has
31716 posts
206 users

They have 3 times as many posts, almost exactly, and 63x more users.
SF really is a community, folks. For a little over a year, we have stayed together and had wonderful, long conversations.

This is not an "SF is better" post, but it is an amazing thing to realize that the people here have had that much to say to each other. :)

Indeed, my post count was never this high at SR.

As I think you may have intended to say, Merc, the key point here is not SF or SR but the community. We were like that over on SR in the old days too. If SF disappeared tommorow (Lord of Forests forbid), the community would find another place and continue on, much as we are now, or indeed, much as we were back in the old days before the MBF.

It's a wonderful community and I'm thankful to be a part of it. Yes, even Honold. In fact, especially Honold, for a community formed of people who always agree with one another, and shorn of people prepared to not only maintain a contrary point of view, but defend it with skill, evidence, and reason, is a poor and intellectually moribund one.

Also, I should not forget the new faces that have added fresh life: members like Mubs and EdwardK and SteveK and Dozer. Not to mention my good friend Ekaf Ami, of course.

(Err.... Iz that more than one line already?)

(Yes, Tea. Quite a lot more than one line, actually.)

(Oh good. Then I can ztop now.)

(Yes. I think you better. We have to go back to work.)

(Already?)

(Yes.)

(Why are the minutes alwayz shorter when it'z lunchtime?)

(It's just the way they are, Tea. I don't know why.)

Hear hear! This is the main reason why SF is the first visit whenever I am on the net. The SF community is always willing to help, and give advise and opinions. I even enjoy reading the posts at the SF Pub&Brewery. Unlike the SR Bar&Grille which I refuse to visit because the tone of the comments there can be unpleasant, to say the least.

I am really thankful to all those who contribute to make this great community.

Cheers,
Edward

Perhaps this is a great place for core members to socialize, but substantive posts in the Computers forum are rather sparse. :(

For my part, Lunar Mist, I confess to having read and made so many substantive posts in the computers forum (one or another of the 'computers' fora) over the years that I've said pretty much all I have to say in that department, and read most of the things I want to read several times over. These days I rarely take much part in the computers forum here, and, as a general rule, don't even read the list of topics at Storage Review anymore.

Sad but true. Are computers getting boring? Or have I just being doing the "read and write about computers" thing too long? A little of both, I guess.

Pass me my pipe and slippers, please.

If there's nothing much happening in the industry, there's not much to talk about, is there?

Enjoy your pipe and slippers, tannin. And have a dwink as well.
