and an old Maxtor 5120 in my 1.4 gig athlon, for storage server.

Decided to pull all my scsi stuff out, and set the box up with the above drives, I have laying around from trying to use them in my mac, a 2940
Adaptec card so I can talk to my external raid box for storage, and, (shuddersl, a Maxtor/Promiseless ata 133 controller.

We shall see how this works...

The Ultra 133 cards are fine.

i bought a fasttrak 66 back in 2000, great card for the money. I bought it for about the price that promise now sells its Ultra line of cards..... But that was before RAID 0 became popular with the kiddies.

Well, the onboard promise controller sucks. I can't get anything to work on it, but, it looks like I did. We'll see. BSOD on initial post install boot.

Connected 5120 to motherboard, and boot off that. Still one of the faster
access time hard drives, ever.
Disconnected the Diamond Plus 9 or whatever, and I'm waiting to get the drivers installed for the other cards, and see if I can find one for it.

I don't think it's bootable.

Have to check specs on the A7m 266 to see what the speed is on the ide ports...

The promise/maxtor 133 card sucked. Did not recognize the drive, etc.

Plugged same drive into Sonnet Tempo Trio, and it's formating right now.

I know the drive was formatted mac, but, not being able to format, or see the drive with the Promise/maxtor ata 133 sucks.

Sonnet Tempo trio appears to work, and I'm formatting the 160 gig maxtor Diamondmax 9, right now...

Promise/Maxtor problems

I switched to 3Ware for ATA RAID and have never looked back.

Well, got it going. The ATA 100 channels on the mobo are way faster then the drives, so connected the boot, Max/quax DM 9 to that, and I'm booting off it. 23 mb/sec writes, 45 mb/sec reads, according to ATTO 2.50.

Installed all the drivers for the trio card, and connected the 5120 to that.
Even though both the mobo, and the Trio card use promiseless chips, they both APPEAR functional.

General plan is to scan stuff at work, load emails onto laptop, and archive on this sort of server machine, with external scsi box, and two internal ide drives.
Also to download emails to this box, 1.4 ghz athlon. We'll see if it works.

One thing I will say, is setting up PC's takes longer then macs, but the results are better.

Appears VIA ultra DMA fuxored my whole install. Can't start in safemode.
Apparently, it deletes an integral 2000 file.

Currently reformatting in 98, and starting over. :frowner:

PEBCAKE

Appears I didn't finish the flashing the mobo properly by loading defaults on boot. It went by so fast, I didn't see it. Followed asus instructions, and currently installing 2000.

See what happens.
