I'd like it known that I came here before I went out in search of the 10 years worth of porno that I've been waiting until I got broadband service to download.

Congratulations Merc! :mrgrn:

Can I ask what plan/speed/upload/download you are on? The reason I ask is that over here at OZ, there are only 2 Cable Internet Providers and we are being "screwed" by both of them. ADSL on the other hand is much better over here.

Cheers,
Edward

Somehow I don't think we'll be seeing much of Merc for a while. 10 years is a lot of porno to catch up on. :mrgrn:

My ISP only has one service plan, EdwardK, "Up to 1.5MBit up/128kbit down". They more-or-less rely on the distance factor to sort out bandwidth.

I don't have any cap for up or download. Yet.

And Verizon is one of the ISPs fighting RIAA to keep customer info private.

re: Games, I don't have any installed on the PCs I have set up right now. I'll have to find or get some. :)

I'm imagining our gaming tastes are different. Let me know what you'd be interested in playing and I'll let you know if I even have it.

If we could plan something with many people that would also be fun. I'm interested in anything...

jtr...With the D/L speed Merc. is getting, I'll bet he can play games AND download mega Pr0n at the same time.

I think we share that title, Pradeep. I'm still on 56K. :( If we had Canadian prices on broadband here I'd switch in a New York minute.

Since everyone is testing their connexion's speed, I figured I should too with my newer broader service.

The above was from a server at Hamilton, a few hundred kilometers from where I am. The closest server from me only measures download speed and it tells me this. SteveC still owns the crown. Even the fastest possible service in my area can't beat his.

But for Net browsing, there's little difference between Merc's and my speed. Only for large downloads does it make a difference...and it's far from being like between dialup and anything called broadband.

Merc should be able to survive and even enjoy life with a gigabit/s line, I'm sure.

Congrats and I hope it doesn't cost you too much.

What are some good games to play? Admitedly I'm a bit out of touch. I get halflife: Counter-strike free from a friend who had an extra copy and the last game I purchased was quake3.

I've played a bit of america's army, warcraft III, unreal 2 (i think it was 2), and battlefield 1942.

I have a free linux or windows box and 384kbit/s upload and would be glad to host a server off my connection if it means we could all get together one sunday afternoon or something for a few games.....

Pradeep is sub-28.8, jtr. Whatever you have, I assure you that you're doing better than he is.

I'm presently on a mission to redline this service for as long as humanly possible.

Handruin: Games-wise, I got ahold of some newer stuff not too long ago. UT2003 is the only thing that looks like a network game, though. I've got CS but I understand it's pointless to play at this point unless you've been playing forever. Unless I can convince you to play Worms (and if I can find the install disk), that's probably about it. :)

This weekend I'll probably play around with a DDNS service and see if I can get something running in the VPN-able file service department (for work stuff). If Verizon will even route VPN traffic, that is.

I usually get download speeds in the 5.8 KB/sec range, which accounting for overhead means 48 Kb or better connection speeds. I guess Pradeep has the honors all to himself. :(

I'm down with worms...I LOVE that game. (Pst...Tallman where are you?!...)

I have the original worms II...what version do you have? I think modem users can play this game.

Besides Tiger Woods Golf, that for some reason won't work on 2000 anymore, I have a couple, but the only game I really use is Quake 3.

Go for it. However, I still get my butt kicked, and stuck, on the last level.

I've beat the guy a couple times, but I've spent way too much loosing my ass....

Xaero OWNS me!!! :errr:

Hmm, looks like I get the title of "Bitch with slowest dial up" now :(

Umm... I doubt it. Hows this for you. I'm on a 56.6 dial up which when I had an apartment near the phone company screamed (windows said it connected at 58.8 most nights) even with electrical appliances above and to the sides of me (apartment living is great!) then I bought a house in the sticks... same everything except location. Windows now says 24.4 and about 26 on a good night. anyone here on a lower connection then 28.8? :eekers:

Now that is slow :( Worst I've ever seen on my travels was 30.6 out in the Yorkshire Dales (a fair distance away from civilisation). I used to get around 41.3 to 42.6Kb/s when on dial-up, but now enjoy the benefits of 512Kb/s DSL (has to be one of the smartest moves I ever made :D ) - 484Kb/s download/228Kb/s upload on average without any capping for UK £19 per month. Once you get used to that, you'll never want to go back to dial-up......

before I got cable internet I was stuck on dialup... using a hardware modem I could get maybe 21.6kbps-24kbps... using a lucent winmodem I could get 24kbps-26.4kbps.

For a period of about 3 months I would occasionally get 28.8kbps

That is with trying 3-4 different ISPs in my area and after running a direct line to where the phone comes into my house.

I remember using win3.1 and AOL. AOL automatically assumed you had a 2400baud modem and thus set my 14.4 modem down to 2.4kbps instead of just using the default speed of the modem how intelligent is that?

I surfed at 2400bps for about a year before I realized that I had a 14.4 modem. Now that is slow.

In early 1997 I was using a 14.4 modem with Netcom as my ISP. That Spring I switched to Cable and haven't looked back. :) It has been a pleasant 6-years of relatively speedy downloads.

I'm about 22,000 feet from the exchange and I connect at 26.4kb/sec. To the victor go the spoils of net sloth! The worst part is that I did have broadband back in Aus for about a year, using wireless MMDS for dl and modem for upstream, I used to get up to 6mbit/sec before Austar went titsup and stopped the service.

All I need is for Verizon to get their BroadbandAccess product out to Upstate NY and I will be fine. Apparently good for average dl's of 500kb/sec. Sadly right now it's only available in San Diego CA and Washington D.C. Even the NationalAccess which is available where I am would be considerably faster than the dial-up I have now, and I wouldn't require a landline.
