I think they pretty much had to. As far as I remember, the old version was based on the 2008 version of the product, and as I recall it didn't deal with large drives or GPT partitions very well.

The rescue disk of the new version doesn't work with the UEFI BIOS. No keyboard or mouse.

Since ATI2012 does in fact work with EFI, I'm going to go ahead and blame WD, to the surprise of absolutely no one.
