I'm stuck today with another overly optimistic customer who wants to upgrade his box for not enough money. The CPU/motherboard/memory/PSU and probably the chassis too would need to be changed. He also wants a burner into this too. He didn't talk about the graphic card (crossing fingers). All this for under 600$CDN. Simply impossible. At least here. Would I be in the States, it wouldn't even be hard. Oh and did I mention that he wants a larger-than-40GB HDD too?

Best prices shipped on Picewatch, verified :

AthlonXP Thoroughbred 1700+ OEM : 51U$ at Newegg.com (or 60.24U$ elsewhere for the retail box)
Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu : 16U$ at NewEgg.com
ECS K7S5A : 51U$ at MemoryLabs.com
256MB PC2100 : 40.49U$ at Portatech.com
Western Digital WD800JB 80GB : 106.75U$ at BuyExtremeGear.com
Lite-On LTR-48246S (48/24/48) : 52.99 at GoogleGear.com
Enlight EN-7280 340W with 2 rear 80mm fans : 68U$ at EMSComputing.com
______________________________________________
Total : 386.23U$ (594.36$CDN) or ~6U$ less with retail CPU

Best prices for the same hardware here :

Athlon XP Thoroughbred OEM : 87$CDN or 101$CDN retail
Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu : 20$CDN CHEAPER HERE, WE RULE!!!! ;-)
ECS K7S5A : 90$CDN
256MB PC2100 : 90$CDN
Western Digital WD800JB 80GB : 182$CDN
Lite-On LTR-48246S (48/24/48) : 90$CDN
Enlight EN-7280 nowhere to be found.
Antec SX630-II (more or less equivalent) : 128$CDN
______________________________________________
Total : 687$CDN (446.27U$) or 6$CDN less with retail CPU

Even my cost isn't below 600$CDN, so I cannot make a damn penny on this upgrade. I'll tell him what it cost and if he's not willing to spend a little more $$, send him see someone else.

Québec needs Pricewatch too :( A Pricewatch for resellers would be a nice tool to have too.

Currency converter for those interested to compare prices per part.

P.S. I forgot to say that we have a 15% taxe on everything here too. So that 687$CDN is in fact ~790$CDN. Almost 200$CDN more in the end than in the States.

Agreed. I think there was a Canadian area on Pricewatch a few years ago, but it disappeared. It probably didn't make it because of the very small number of online retailers here. I gave up searching around, and my fear of courier/gorillas made it an easy choice for me to get stuff from local shops.

Makes sense that the cooler is cheaper up here, it won't have to work as hard. You know...colder...snow... (bad, I know. Sorry).
