What is a high temp for an AMD 1800+ processor?
My dad's computer is running close to 60C. This has me concerned.
When I opened the case it was dust bunny city.
I'm thinking I need to add a couple new case fans and either reapply or replace the processor's heatsink and fan.

I think 60deg C is tolerable. I remember my 1700+ and my older 1500+, when I still had them would reach 63 or 65.

And only lately, I had my Sempron 2400+ socket-A running for about 6 minutes without a fan. I had disconnected the fan from the power plug to clean the Heat Sink and forgot to replug the fan connector before running the machine. It was good I decided to check whether the fan was running before I went to sleep. I had planned to check memory for the rest of the night.

It was shocking to see the stationary fan. PULL the PLUG, QUICK!!!

It is running well right now. I don't know how much of its life I flushed down the drain by that exploit. But I can say, AMD makes some sturdy processors.

It probably throttled back to something like 800MHz when the temperature of the core skyrocketed near 90C. I don't think this has damaged the processor in any way.

I agree with Coug, Paugie. No bad effects should follow.

Will, 60 is a little higher than I'd feel comfortable with. Be happier to see it in the mid to high 50s. Replace your heatsink goo, check your case temperatures and add fans if need be, and check your supply voltage - even a tiny reduction in the voltage makes a major difference to the temperature of the chip, so if your BIOS lets you do that, sneak it down a tidgy bit.

For those CPUs, 60-65 at 100% CPU usuage with the retail HSF combo is typical. At idle, you should see it dip slightly below 60.
