Windows 7 Memory issue

See attached image.

This machine has 12GB in it, and it passed memtest86+ overnight at these settings. For some reason, the line reads:

"Installed memory (RAM): 12.0 GB (8.00 GB usable)"

And sure enough, my apps only see 8GB.

After some googling, some people said that doing some re-mapping in the BIOS fixed the issue, but I can't find the settings they used.

Any advice?

Odd, I never had any luck with an upgrade after many attempts and after wasting so much time with that decided I didn't want to invest more time in doing a clean setup. Maybe some day.

Does vista see 12gb on that computer?

I have. Other than voltage/timing stuff, I can't find anything. There is no setting for "reserve" or "memory mapping" that I can find. The fact that it sees the memory and refuses to use it has me puzzled. memtest86+ sees all the memory as well. So does CPU-Z in Win7.

Yeah. I just looked on my i7 system and I don't see anything like that either.
I've got Server 2008 on mine but only 6GB RAM, and that's fine.

Well, I can't really help. I did see 8GB as the limit for the W7 Home Basic, though, and wondered for a moment if MS might have set all versions of the RC to that.

I haven't tried the RC so far myself, but this has prompted me to d/l it to put on a spare machine.

Following up on this issue, even after I switched back to XP it only showed 8GB of RAM. Removing even one stick (any one stick) brought it down to 4GB.

So I tried upgrading the RAM, and it works fine!

Old memory:
Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 12GB (6x2GB) 9-9-9-24 1.60V ver8.1 HX3X12G1600C9

New memory:
Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 12GB (6x2GB) 9-9-9-24 1.60V ver9.1 HX3X12G1600C9

Putting all the old RAM in another system (running the same motherboard, and same OS image) caused it to work fine as well.
