I managed to disable it in Vista and save a bunch of RAM

Vista's Defender and OneCare Live both have pretty awful performance, even by the generous standards set by Norton and Mcafee.
Here's a up to date report. Kapersky and Coug's AntiVir look like solid choices; both AVG and NOD32 fell into a lower category.
