My Windows Update for XP64 has not worked in years or maybe ever. Normally I don't care, but the IE 6 is causing problems with warnings on numerous web sites. Is there a manual update of Windows components somwhere? I thought there was a method in times gone by, but cannot find it now. :rant:

MS has blocked most of the unofficial 3rd party tools that could do patch management.
For major components like IE, Media Player, .NET, etc, you can download those components manually by going to their respective sub-sites on www.microsoft.com. eg: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx
But for normal patches, you need a list of the actual KB numbers, and visit each KB article and they can be downloaded directly from their KB articles, but recently MS has been removing the download links (or not publishing them), simply referring people to use WindowsUpdate or Microsoft Update.

You can normally get the Service packs for DL. If you right click Computer or "My Computer" and choose properties it will tell what SP level you are up to and for Windows XP you can get up to SP3

I could order IE8 on CD for $5. I wonder if that would work better. :erm:

You don't have to use it for your primary browser. Lock it down like it is on Windows Server 2003 and later.

I downloaded but did not try to install that update to the other OS drive. My computer and hard drives (not to mention the optical) are just so whacked out now I can't stand it. :frowner:

After 260 MB installed and two reboots, there are even more updates on top of the updates. It's crazy. I suppose some people update Windows more often than every two years.Do you leave it on autonomic?
Updating a new install can take days. I leave it on automatic for all my machines. Some larger companies manage their updates using an internal control process to make sure the updates don't break compatibility with older apps.

Home systems get updated when I feel like doing it. Machines that are expected to work get updates in the wee small hours on Friday, because that gives me some time to find out if there's an issue with an update, to go out and fix something that's broken from an update, or for office workers to complain if there's an issue.

Install IE8 with the standalone update. It will fix whatever issue appeared after WindowsUpdate screwed up.
This has been happening for the past few months on Windows XP machines.
