This may be a singularly unsuccessful topic, but what the hell ...
France rebuilds relations with Anglo cousin ...
For the first time in 12 years (remarkable considering the countries are only 20 miles apart at their closest points), a French president is visiting the UK. Further, he's making statesman-like speeches affirming their kinship: Britain and France have been inexorably intertwined for more than 900 years - they have been at each others throats for significant periods, but when a common threat loomed (Germany), they were brothers.
My take is that this has not been widely reported (thank you Rupert Murdoch), but I suspect it's historically significant and a sign of hunkering down before the bad weather hits home.
The president is also promising more troops for Afghanistan (not sure about Iraq). This is significant because after the US, France has traditionally been the leading source of UN troops (AFAIK). They've just had a bit of trouble seeing eye-to-eye with Dubya.
BTW, it's been fashionable to put down France - especially in Britain - but most countries would be envious of their standard of living and prosperity, not to mention their cultural history.
