This may be a singularly unsuccessful topic, but what the hell ...

France rebuilds relations with Anglo cousin ...

For the first time in 12 years (remarkable considering the countries are only 20 miles apart at their closest points), a French president is visiting the UK. Further, he's making statesman-like speeches affirming their kinship: Britain and France have been inexorably intertwined for more than 900 years - they have been at each others throats for significant periods, but when a common threat loomed (Germany), they were brothers.

My take is that this has not been widely reported (thank you Rupert Murdoch), but I suspect it's historically significant and a sign of hunkering down before the bad weather hits home.

The president is also promising more troops for Afghanistan (not sure about Iraq). This is significant because after the US, France has traditionally been the leading source of UN troops (AFAIK). They've just had a bit of trouble seeing eye-to-eye with Dubya.

BTW, it's been fashionable to put down France - especially in Britain - but most countries would be envious of their standard of living and prosperity, not to mention their cultural history.

India buys British Icons

For those who haven't yet heard, Indian company Tata is buying former British car brands Jaguar and LandRover from Ford.

Britain no longer has any native marque, but surely these are two of the most emotive British icons of yesteryear? I find it strangely ironic that Britain's former colony is now buying up the farm (I'm not counting the US 'cause that was a couple hundred years ago).

Gah...I didn't know Lotus was owned by Proton!

Ya got that right, 'bout only thing you got right, lol ur an idiot, yet another Nazi-Bush rant again...this from the former penal colony- takes all kinds. Especially those who have a terrible lack of knowledge about the USA or any of it's presidents, or the general history of the world, lol.

", but what the hell ..." (ok, I'll give ya that, you got that right too, :D)

Germany, is it not France's closer 'Anglo cousin' sharing a border, white supremacist?

Kinship, brothers...wtf, more from a racist bias, maybe? Intertwined, err maybe at a war with each other, unlike the USA which saved *both* of their sorry arses in WWII from the friggin German's, while Dubya (aka USA) also saved sorry *arse* Oz from the Japanese. Man oh, man are you youngsters with little education these days in Oz land so incredibly ignorant. Sheeesh, I assume this is not much of a representation of Oz, least not a good one.

wtf, what are U ranting about here, what bad weather? Everybody is suntanning on the French Rivera topless the weather is so warm now with global warming, lol.

Just curious, other than Bush Jr, do you have any idea what the names of these people you are referring to are?

BTW, it's been fashionable to put down France - especially in Britain - but most countries would be envious of their standard of living and prosperity, not to mention their cultural history.
Most people or most countries, meaning you and who else, lovely non-sequitur? The French have the best sparkling wine bar none (but only from the Champagne region, rest of their sparklers are not much better than the swill they produce in Oz land), the best cheeses...umm that's about all I envy. China has a much longer and illustrious cultural history than France, maybe you should do some studying?

No, I would say Rolls Royce/Bentley is the premier (emotive icons of yesteryear') marque in the British auto world. China is not a former penal colony, yet they bought into British auto companies big time recently...guess 'time', classic Dubyian redneck, don't like them thar chinks, so guess he didn't 'notice' that! lol. Typical USA/Bush bashing, just like Tannin, lol.

I don't find it strangely ironic, your near total ignorance of history in general. Couple hundred years ago, the USA was at war with Britain, nothing we wanted to buy, lol ('cept maybe some tea, had a nice tea party, didn't we :D ).

In other world news, the magestic whopping crane population is doing better recently, though still near extinction, whoohoo!

Though of course, as usual; ever expanding populations of almost all areas of human habitation, threaten wildlife, especially the vital wetlands/tidal/coast estuary systems ('cept our closest cousins the cockroach, can't ever get rid of them either, sans bio/nuclear war, lol) via our endless generation of pollution--- and global cooling (you saw my other post on that, didn't U?) has a part too :D

Jeez Uda. What a load of crap. Please stay away from the cheap wine before posting.

Besides, it was a coalition of US and British Commonwealth forces that defended Australia in WWII from the Japanese Imperial forces. Britain was already tied up in India and Burma fighting the Japanese when Australia began getting bombed.

BBC uncovers lost Iraq billions

A BBC investigation estimates that around $23bn (£11.75bn) may have been lost, stolen or just not properly accounted for in Iraq.
For the first time, the extent to which some private contractors have profited from the conflict and rebuilding has been researched by the BBC's Panorama using US and Iraqi government sources.
A US gagging order is preventing discussion of the allegations.
The order applies to 70 court cases against some of the top US companies.
