XP & SATA

XPP SP2 does not like my old SATA system and wants drivers from a floppy disk during installation. Of course I have no floppy disk. I searched some articles on the net, and it seems to be a common problem. Unfortunately, answers are either the obvious (buy a floppy drive) or too complicated (build a jetstream disc).

Can I simply install XP to a PATA drive, install drivers in Windows and then image the partition to an SATA drive? Does anyone have any other ideas or simple instructions for an ordinary person to understand? Thanks.

1. Try turning off AHCI in your BIOS.
2. Yes, you can install on PATA, install drivers and then clone to SATA.
3. You can use nLite + the drivers on driverpacks.org + XPSP3 to make a really lovely install disc. It can even be an install DVD. Very handy.
4. If you ask me really nicely and you're using a fairly common chipset I can probably build a sysprep image for you.

Well, f*ck me. The computer restarts about 4 seconds after shutdown! I hate trying to build a system from the parts. I've not tried to tackle the SATA issue yet.

Holding the power button in too long and forcing a restart?

I usually press the power button for 0.5-1 sec. If I press the power switch for 6-8 seconds it will turn off and not turn on again. Sometimes it takes that long for everything in Windows to close, but the C: can get corrupted by forcing a power down.

I have a new retail XP package sitting right here, but I used TinyXP Rev09 on my machine at home. It has every driver on earth already slipstreamed onto it. Both the onboard SATA RAID controller and my high-end 3Ware controller were automatically detected and useable. I know this is possible manually, but this is much simpler (though illegal...perhaps I'll try to change the key to the legal one I have?)

The main thing you need to worry about is that when it goes, fragments can cut your inner arms fairly easily. That is why our master destroyer, Coug, uses more professional implements of destruction.

A BIOS update fixed it.
