That got your attention, didn't it? Actually, this is nothing new. Charlie Cooper rants.

It's only noteworthy because an IT hack is publicly berating Symantec and its CEO.

Nice! Good link mubs. Two hours of his life wasted only to be asked to pay money. I wonder if he could get a refund for their product since it didn't work.

When I worked in tech support, people used to bitch about having to make a toll call to us. When I suggested that we could charge them $40 per incident instead, they felt better about the whole thing.

The fact of the matter is that a few thousand people's lost business isn't worth good support. Support is expensive.

Charlie Cooper is quite clearly a complete moron who doesn't know jack about computers, or the computer indistry.

Yes, he is quite right to claim that Symantec AV products are approximately as attractive a a steaming pile of dog poo (although somewhat more likely to leave you with a bad infection if you are unwise enough to consume them).

But let's look at his mistakes:

1: He let himself get infected with a trojan (ergo, he's probably not too bright)

2: He bought Norton Anti-virus

3: He expected it to work?

4: He ignored the manual removal instructions posted on Symantec's own website

5: He called a tech support number

6: He seems to think that the answer is to hand over responsibility for security to the very same company that made the spyware problem possible in the first place!

Tannin, you're absolutely right on every point about CC (the same thoughts went through my mind as I was reading the article).

But look at it this way. NAV is aimed directly at and marketed to the consumer, who doesn't know jack from a virus from a worm from adware. Given that, and if you assume for a minute that CC is a consumer, his rant is dead on.
