The Home to Pro upgrade is US$99 RRP via the store... OEM price appears to be around ~US$135 and full retail license is ~US$190... Also it appears that upgrade packs are no longer available (at least in the channels I have available to me), so it looks like MS is really forcing people to use...

I've looked at a few here in Oz, and most seem to be based on the same underlying hardware (there seems to be only 2-3 ODMs for these devices) especially when looking at ones that are GSM/3G/4G mobile phone based. As for service I guess it'll all be about connectivity options to the wider world...

Western Digital vs. Seagate: Only One Is a Buy

I was under the impression that he was taking a break from things to pursue other interests? IIRC. Nitsirk is a personal friend and a post in late '16 indicates was fine at the time? (Her last login was 2mths ago).

Western Digital vs. Seagate: Only One Is a Buy

Early models used LinkAMedia Controllers with Toshiba NAND, current PCIe/NVMe models use Sandforce controllers with Toshiba NAND. Very few detailed reviews of their current consumer based SATA SSDs so can't tell you. Typically firmware was customised by Seagate.

    Samsung 30TB 2.5" SSD announced

Either it's using multiple SAS connections, or it's not really SAS, but some sort of U.2 interface, OR Samsung are using the data rate off the NAND ignoring the SAS interface limitations. (I'm going the last one). Very little is currently known about it. FYI Seagate 60TB SSD in 3.5" form...

FYI: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/02/samsung-crams-30tb-of-ssd-into-a-single-2-5-inch-drive/ Drive uses 12Gbps SAS as the interconnect with reported read/write performance of 2.1GBs and 1.7GBs respectively... Pricing unknown.

Agreed. Unfortunately Supermicro isn't that widely available here. Another option would be AsrockRack. (They do 1P and workstation boards, and have bare bone servers as well: http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=4U100-C612#Specifications )

    Budget Servers

I just had a quick look at options, and they are certainly scarce. Lot's of 1P servers in 1RU, but pretty much all 3/4RU servers were all 2P... I know many years ago the entry level HP ML150's had a rack conversion kit, but HP seem to only support the rack conversion kits with the ML350 or...

Yes, but since there is no guarantee what you actually get (exact model/firmware) in each laptop (they only provide based on size/capacity), IMHO it's fairly meaningless giving out scores... Most range from 3.5GB/s down to 1GB/s depending on the device, chipset, CPU and OS combination. (Not to...
