I know a lot of people sitting on Ryzen 3 systems with GTX1660s and waiting for SOME kind of reasonable replacement to come about. I'm telling them to look at the A750 or A770, but most of them are saying that it's not enough of an upgrade vs what they have They want something from AMD or...

4070 is released. It's a little faster than a 3080 and it's the closest thing to a reasonably priced Ada card but it's STILL $600. nVidia is dreaming if it thinks people are clamoring for a 4060 that's still hanging around the $500 price point, but that looks to be the case.

    Protected Game CDs?

It's a frequent subject of discussion on the makemkv forums. I have a Pioneer drive that works for that purpose, but the only 4k BDs I've ripped myself are the Lord of the Rings movies. The only other disc I've done since 2020 is the BD release of "Einstein on the Beach" since there was an...

The outer door on my building locks with a key code and there's one for the parking lot as well. The closest thing I have to an enemy in the building is the judgmental Dominican lady who keeps calling my roommate a hoe for daring to show off her tattoos.

I had a home invader today. I unlock the door to my apartment if my roommate borrows my car, since my housekey is on the same keyring as my car key. She had a job interview this morning, so she's off doing that, and I was sitting at the desk in my bedroom, working. My downstairs neighbor's two...

    Novel Point Of Failure

I don't trust external hard drives for anything but temporary needs. I have found 2.5" drives to be more reliable for those needs, but the largest mechanical 2.5" drives are 5TB and I believe those are SMR. I know there's a cost for a small NAS, but I'd probably look at a 2 or 4 bay NAS for long...

WD has a teensy little oops

For reference, it's possible to buy an LTO5 SAS drive for $100 - $200 and 1.5TB tapes can be had for $10 each in bulk. The costs become similar to buying a high capacity single hard drive, but tape is more affordable as need for capacity increases.

    Protected Game CDs?

There is currently a gold standard for optical drives, which are actually older BD-RW drives or units that support flashing back to older firmware, since most newer drives refuse to make bit-perfect copies of 4k BDs. "White book" CDs usually didn't have the screwy structural issues that are used...

It's a longstanding tradition and sometimes a matter of law in many European cities that the tallest building is the city's cathedral. This is something of a joke, but also still very true in most places that aren't big enough to have skyscrapers.

Astro is something I'd love to do but the Chicago area is the most light-polluted place on Earth. There's a pink-purple haze everywhere within probably 100 miles of the city, even on the darkest nights. I saw a pro yesterday taking cosplay photos who had three R5s strapped to his body and my...

They're supposed to be a compromise between the U (ultra low voltage) and H (High performance) mobile CPUs. but the NUC is technically a desktop. They couldn't stuff the high performance mobile CPUs in a device that could literally be made out of heat sink? I'd rather have m.2 + 2.5" drive...

Hilariously, a lot of phones in the USA with carrier specific models have eSim functionality blocked in the OS.
