He probably thought you were Timwit, AD. The old bugger is so vague it's positively scary. Still, I can understand the confusion - both human, intelligent, and good looking. Easy mistake to make.

    Intel vs AMD

The sky has fallen in! Tannin has been selling Intel kit for more than a year now! I couldn't believe it - he has always loved his AMD stuff and never really cared for Intel stuff at all. Well, not since the Pentium M (which was good for notebooks) and the 486DX/2-66 (which was a humdinger in...

    Windows 8

They need a special Metro Key. All computer manufacturers must be required to add it the same way they were required to add the new "windows" key back in Win 95 days. The Metro Key would make life much easier for non-technical people using Windows 8. It would be an oversize key prominently...

A Linksys router piggybacked to an ActionTec router, doesn't connect to the internet

Using multiple routers is generally easy, once you get your mind around a couple of basic gotchas. DISCLAIMER: I am not a network expert, I just know how to make stuff work. First, the two routers MUST have different IP addresses. Second, remember that they each have TWO IP addresses, the...

Shaving solutions, or, what do Gilette and all those companies do with all their $?

Don't talk to me about razor blades. Hopeless damn things. Doesn't matter what brand I use, they go blunt before I'm anywhere near finished a single shave. Also, even with my arms, it's very hard to reach the tricky spot between your shoulder blades.

Sigh ..... the 7D is a very, very different camera. Saying it's "just a higher end xxD series" simply shows that you haven't got a clue. Oh, and yes, I'm speaking from knowledge, not from some thing I read in a magazine. I own a 7D, and also own various xxD series cameras to compare it with...

    Secure USB

Here in Oz, SD, the full number (including area code) is 10 digits but if you are dialing somewhere in the same area you "only" have to dial the last 8. Why not only the last 6 FFS? Organizing digital photos and videos

Dave is right on the money a second time. Lightroom = lock-in. It also equals glacial performance (hey, it's an Adobe product, what did you expect?) and lots of CPU-hogging "features" that are completely useless to you, plus a complete inability to handle a single file - every damn thing you do...

    Another slow disk thing

If this was my problem to sort, I'd start by switching off all the RAID stuff, taking a spare drive (any drive I had handy, don't care which SATA version), and doing a test install of any handy random Windows OS - XP Home Edition SP3, for example. This would tell me that either: 1: the...

Dave's method - "stick each session's photos in a folder named yyyy-mm-dd <subject>" isn't just the best method, it's the ONLY method. That, Time, is only because Telstra are complete and utter bastards. (OK, OK, tell you something you don't know already.) People have much more difficulty with 8 digits than they do with 7. 8 is just outside the zone of easy memorisation. 7 is just inside it. 6 is very easy and even quite...

    Slow system - disk related?

Back to this thread. Thanks Time. I actually have no reason to suspect a hardware problem with the drives. In any case, it is very rare to see performance problems with hard drives that are not accompanied by data integrity issues. This is pretty obviously software-related. Apart from anything...

UDMA Mode 5 for both drives, Dave. CPU utilisation is not an issue: just to confirm this, I started a couple of slow-loading programs just now and see that the CPU utilisation never got over about 40% for either core.

    Slow system - disk related?

Tannin's Thinkpad sucks. It's really, really slow. I'm fairly sure that the performance issues are disk related. We are seeing a glacial boot process, and very slow program start-up times. One operational with whichever tasks are desired, it runs at a perfectly decent pace. The hardware: T 400...
