Which OS Upgrade for old computer?

So now you'll do between 200Kppd and 210ppd. Fedora with LXDE or Lubuntu would have worked. I think both fit on a CD. Fedora 20 is due next week and there will also be a version with LXDE as the default window manager. I much prefer the default layout of LXDE rather than XFce's. I...

Alternative folding support idea - mining for coins to fund F@H

The appeal of making money with my rig is quite high, actually. I might pause or at the very least greatly decrease my FAH contribution in the upcoming months if I succeed to generate a substantial amount of money from this. It could speed up my financial recovery quite a bit. I earn a decent...

    2TB SSDs

The goal with large SSD drives is to replace SAN with large arrays of mecanical drives. Only one of these can put to shame a 40x 15Krpm HDD SAN in terms of IOps. Where SSDs won't replace mecanical drives soon is when large capacity is needed, without the high IOps requirement.

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

In late 2008, you were 10. No one expects a 10-years-old to make enlightened choices. There were better deals back then, but there were worse.

No. It's worth around 100$ IMO. I've owned a computer store for years and that's I would ask for it if I was to sell such a system now. Are you buying or selling?

    How to create a wiki?

Thanks for the advices. I won't touch this before Saturday's evening. For now, the one made with Sharepoint will be ok. It's not quite as simple to use as the one I had at my previous work place (I wasn't the one who set it up and I don't know what he used), but as a free solution already in...

Apparently, it's possible to operate a free Sharepoint wiki. Both Sharepoint Foundation and MS SQL Server Express (hold a DB up to 10GB) are free products. I'll still try turnkey latter on. We are an almost exclusive Microsoft place. The only person here thinking about installing stuff in...

I also want to know if LTC mining ramps well when you add more than one GPU in a system. If it does, I would put my two Radeon 7xxx in the same box in order to save on my electric bill. I know there's a hit when you do that with the AH client.

ECC, Registered AND on the HCL for the board. It means this one if you want 16GB sticks (it will run at 1600MHz with the E5-2620v2 because the CPU doesn't support 1866MHz RAM) and this one if you plan to use 8GB sticks. You need 4 sticks per processor (or 8) if you want to fully use the bandwidth.

You don't have to be exotic on the heatsinks : these CPUs only have an 80W TDP. Anything compatible with the LGA2011 and with active cooling will do. Also, regarding the RAM, you'll buy server-grade RAM (YOU WILL!) so the sticks won't have tall RAM-heatsinks. They will fit below most tower...

Don't buy any E5-24xx ; they are about to change generation in the next two months. At a similar price, go for the E5-2620v2. Faster and cooler. There are more LGA2011 boards on the market than LGA1356 anyway and some dual-socket are even standard ATX. Heatsinks are easier to find too.
