It's awful when you can sense a pet is near the end. Cats and dogs live long enough to get very attached to them, but not long enough to make lifelong companions. For all the talk about extending human lives, I wish first we can find a way to extend our pets lives closer to ours.

    4k TVs and Monitors

I saw the 24" version in my local Micro Center. The color seemed much better than the other monitors. Combined with the sharpness, it was awesome. I finally couldn't see pixels (that's an issue for me even with the large screen 4K monitors). In my opinion for large form factor monitors (27" and...

Chewy, one thing worth remembering here is that medical science is always advancing. If your wife has a life expectancy of 10-15 years based on current medical technology, I've little doubt significant advances will occur during that time which may well prolong her life further. So yes, enjoy...

    Thank You Google Fiber

I'm mostly referring to the time when they stopped doing those things but lots of people still had 56K. In particular, for a time I was on 56K and lots of web pages had flash videos. It started taking upwards of a minute to load a page in some cases. They still do that for microcontroller...

    Thank You Google Fiber

I came to this thread thinking maybe Google came out with a breakfast cereal. Anyway, Roadrunner here is still at 20 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up. Not super speedy by today's standards, but I find many websites load even slower than that. I had a nightmare a few months ago where I was back on 56K for...

I'm just repeating what I've heard. I should mention also that I heard these things when I was a kid, so they may have been true with cars of the time even if they're not true now.

I'm surprised it didn't break. I've been told by a number of people, including mechanics, that you should never, ever floor a car, much less do so 50 times in a row.

    6TB hard drives

Yep, that would be exactly what I think the market would need instead of 7200 RPM huge mechanical disks. Get the worst grade flash, even the stuff that might get trashed because it's way below specs, the shittiest controller going, don't even try to pack it in efficiently, and you'll still end...

    6TB hard drives

Yeah, but we're talking here about huge drives which aren't going to be on computers sold with one mechanical disk. Just looking at a sampling of systems on Newegg typically those one disk machines have something between 500 GB to 1TB. I don't care if 7200 RPM drives are made for those who may...

    6TB hard drives

Again, the point is that the stuff people typically put on 4TB or 6TB drives doesn't require the fast access times of an SSD. Fast access times are only important when you have lots of small files, not a few large ones. That being the case, why not make decrease spindle speeds and increase...
  11. J

    6TB hard drives

The point is huge drives are mainly for bulk storage of things like video where access time doesn't matter, and STR of even a 5400 RPM drive is more than sufficient. The downsides of 7200 RPM over 5400 RPM are heat, noise, lifetime, reliability, and density. Before SSDs became affordable faster...

    6TB hard drives

One of the comments to the article mirrors my thoughts here: "I know some will disagree,.. whatever - but what is the goddamned POINT of 7200rpm platter disks for consumers nowadays? Seriously. If you care about performance you either have an OS/Apps SSD or a hybrid drive even."

Same here. Depending upon the make I can sometimes fit into a 36" waist but 38" is what I usually need. Trying to get back down to 30" like I was until my late 20s (sedentary job caused me to put on weight and ever since I've had trouble keeping it off).

    3D Printers

I'm probably less than a year away from getting one of these. I'm waiting for them to drop in price a bit more, increase in resolution, and have the ability to print in at least a few colors. All three of those should happen within a year I think based on current progress. IMO 3D printing for...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Economics would be my guess, not lack of space. SSDs are still primarily used for smaller fast boot drives rather than bulk storage. Granted, they're starting to reach large enough sizes at low enough prices to be the only drive in a system if a person doesn't need more than a few hundred GB...

SSDs - State of the Product?

The part I'm finding interesting is Samsung's roadmap for VNAND. It sounds like they plan to increase chip capacity by a factor of 8 over what they have now by 2017. Presumably, that means drive size will scale by a factor of 8 at more or less the same price points. Assuming mechanical drives...

Best Hard drives for size, storage, and reliability?

Most of those stores are fronts to move stolen/counterfeit merchandise. They operate under one name until the authorities are on to them, then shut down and start up the next day as a different business. If the authorities come to the store to address prior consumer complaints, the store owners...

Yeah, I'm still taken for at least a good decade younger than I am, if not more. The bike riding plus good genetics probably does it (mom is only ~15% gray at 75). In all this side discussion about student loans, I almost forgot-congratulations sedrosken! The earlier you complete college the better from both a personal and financial standpoint.
  23. J

    Early College!

Yeah, but hopefully usurious collection fees won't be a part of that. We're actually starting to have a serious discussion here on getting rid of that aspect of the student loan system.
  24. J

    Early College!

That's better than the system in the states. As i said, I have zero problems getting a person to repay the principal and if applicable the interest. It's the collection fees which cause loan amounts to balloon to levels which can never be repayed. It seems like this isn't a possibility under the...

    Early College!

That's exactly what happened. We never should have made large amounts of money available as student loans. All it did was drive up the price of college to the point where many people have no choice but to borrow to get through school. As a society however we're now faced with several issues...

    Early College!

I might be on board for this if you couldn't discharge credit card debt in bankruptcy like you can now. At least the educational loan went for someone trying to better themselves. A lot of credit card debt is just from people buying junk they don't need. Maybe a good compromise here is to only...
  27. J

    Early College!

It's even worse here in the states. When a loan goes into default, the total amount plus a ~25% collection fee can be rolled into a so-called "rehabilitation loan" where the debtor must make at least 10 on-time monthly payments to have the default cleared from their credit records. If they can't...

question Replacement SSD for a dead Hitachi laptop drive

Reading the the longevity testing Doug linked to, consider that all those drives are still working well after 600 TB of writes. To put things in perspective, I've had my Intel 240 GB SSD running since October 2012 and it has 3.08 TB of writes. At this rate it'll take well over 300 years to reach...

I want to buy a new car

The charging infrastructure mostly matters if you tend to take a lot of trips longer than the car's range, and you don't have a place you can plug in at home to charge for your shorter daily trips, like commuting to work. I'm with Dave. Superior charging infrastructure or not, if I...

    Recovering vanished partitions.

OK, I just got back my last partition. I put in one of the sets of parameters I obtained from the earlier deep scan. Everything seems to be there on all three partitions. Just for reference, Recuva only works if Windows can read the partition. It seems to be mainly to recover accidentally...

The partitions are there, along with all the files except on the last data partition. I'll try the software you linked to. I could also try booting into Ubuntu to see if that works. In all honestly, I'm not spending much time on this because I already have most of the disk back. It's more an...

    Recovering vanished partitions.

problem Scheduled chkdsk command cancels without my intervention on a Win 7 laptop

I think Recovery Console is your only option here. My brother recently had some computer issues (long story). He needed to delete his Windows partition and reinstall XP. Outdoor LED lighting project

Thank you, Doug. In truth, this is a relatively easy mod, at least from the standpoint of installing the LEDs. Anyone who is handy could probably do it. The harder part is the driver. However, if I were doing this for anyone but myself, I would probably just use a commercial driver. The trick...

I did my own outdoor LED lighting project. I had two 300 watt halogen floodlights in the yard which haven't worked for a while. I decided to mod them with LEDs rather than just replace the lamps. Regular lead solder with rosin flux should work fine here. The board is probably made with lead-free solder to comply with regulations but for a repair lead solder is easier to work with. The replacement caps seem OK to me. It took 7 years for the old ones to fail. Assuming this is the problem...

    Advertising, good or bad?

If by effective you mean they get people to buy things they otherwise wouldn't buy, and really don't need, I tend to agree. I'm a firm believer in capitalism and free markets, but I feel people shouldn't be coerced into buying things by slick advertising which makes products seem better than...

I'm not seeing any problems. Just remember the caps are attached to heavy traces so you'll need a soldering iron with a decent amount of watts (i.e. something with only 5 or 10 watts won't work but most decent ones with 40 to 75 watts should do fine). Mark the polarity of the old caps before you...

The problem still exists but it's becoming less of a problem as we're learning about OLED degradation mechanisms. I suspect by the time OLED becomes mainstream the problem will be completely solved. Even now, OLED lifetimes are ~50,000 hours. This is good enough for a commercial product.
