    SYSTEM UPGRADES: FEEDBACK, IDEAS???

"As for drives, I will agree, that most of the time you can take them with you through an upgrade cycle or two. SCSI raid card, less so because of drivers: Multiple companies are starting to orphan their cards. I have an old adaptec SCSI card that they orphaned at Windows 2003 (I was quite...

    SYSTEM UPGRADES: FEEDBACK, IDEAS???

I posted this for a couple reasons. I noticed a bunch of guys that said going from 1.8 ghz to 2.6 ghz in either a dual core 185 or FX amd processor didn't seem like that much of a jump, and, it was an expensive upgrade. Others said it was a big jump. My thinking was the processor(s) might be...

    SYSTEM UPGRADES: FEEDBACK, IDEAS???

Hi I've noticed a number of intresting items that I might take advantage of to speed things up. First: X5DA8 dual 2.8 Xeon mobo and system. I noticed LSI makes a raid card for the onboard scsi. I'm currently using a Megaraid 320-1 to raid my 5 drive SCA box. I'm considering picking up the...

Quiet tower case for 8+ HDDs?

A 180 would give you 6 drives fixed in the lower bay. You could use the front mounted slots for 3-4 drives with removable caddies for storage. Advantage is you wouldn't be using the storage drives all the time, and, you wouldn't have the wear on them as well. Two drives for boot, raid 0, 3...

Quiet tower case for 8+ HDDs?

HMMMM. I've used the SCSI version of the 5 drive hot swap bay, and, replaced the fan with a Vantec Stealth, IIRC. The original fan was industrial strength, and, built like a tank. Sounded like one as well. I don't remember the fan being a special size... No alarm problems, either...

Apple releasing beta software? I'm shocked they aren't charging 129 dollars for it. I tried it for about 10 minutes, then thought better of it. I've despised Apple for the 'OS of the month' upgrade, the constant program upgrade costs, and, the poor quality, nuetered hardware. Other then that...

    More Vista nonsense

WOW: That's really bad. So far, the only program I can't install on 2003 server is Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia. It wants to change a system file, and, 2003 won't let it, so it deinstalls. I can live with that, considering what I paid for it, and, that the updates have set on the disk, as...

David: I may be my eternity/eternally grateful for that 5 lic. 2003 Webserver OS. I just installed it on my server box, and, with tweaks, I forgot how quick an OS could be. It allows the memory tweaks from 2000 Pro, which give it an edge on XP, I think. Is Vista as tweakable as 2000 Pro/2003...
