Well, when you're viewing a 2D image (like a photograph or a TV screen), the only cues that allow your brain to perceive the image as 3-dimensional are those provided by the tonal variation and shadows caused by directional lighting. As I pointed out, on-camera light or light from the direction...

If you mean perspective distortion, the effect you'll get with a wider lens is larger separation between foreground and background. The closest parts of the flower will seem closer, and the farthest parts will seem farther. Using a telephoto lens, in contrast, compresses the foreground and...

    Compiling an Ubuntu Kernel?

This may not work on a Ubuntu distribution. You need to install the sources first for this, and it's possible that the configuration in there might be different the kernel configuration of the default binary kernel installed originally. cat /proc/config > /new/kernel/config_file The above will...

Part of the problem is that, as manufacturers start to push the pixel density, it's inevitable that the updated models are going to look less & less sharp at 100% crops with all but the best glass. It's not out of focus. It's that you're pushing the resolution and contrast of the lens too far...

    XP SP3: What's The Word?

I've noticed a bunch of other security prompts that I'm pretty sure were never around before the update. I can't remember what they were to be honest, but I remember thinking the same thing: they're trying to turn XP into Vista! One example I do recall is that Quickbooks registration would...

    It's HOT

Ahhhh. Thunderstorms! Cool breezes! I feel so much better. A big storm just tore through here and everything smells/feels so much better. P.S. Lowering all the blinds in my house when I leave for work in the morning makes a noticeable difference in terms of heat build up during the day...

Crazy flooding in the midwest. The whole lake drained, and the irony is that the dam held! They successfully reinforced it with sand bags. In retrospect I guess it's pretty obvious they should have let the overflow go over top of the dam... I'm particularly fond of this: Crazy world... :(...

The E-510 & E-520 both have in-body IS too, so it's not that. Most of it is the weather-sealing & the general construction. It's the most tough, weather-sealed body available (even compared to the Canon 1D series). The other reason is the big viewfinder I'd guess. I was at Photo expo in...

Leica makes a 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 for the 4/3 mount. It's difficult to find in North America, but it's a very interesting lens. * Diameter: 78.5mm * Length: 90.4mm * Weight: 535g It was Lens of the Year at Pop Photo in 2007. I've been unable to find reviews from reputable sources.

I would love to see something in that genre from Nikon. The 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 is a great start though. It seems to have above average performance. It's hard to tell with the latest, new lenses though. Everyone invariably raves about it or condemns it - you don't see a lot of carefully...

Tokina makes that lens for Pentax (Pentax rebadges it) and I own one too! I completely agree regarding its versatility. It changes from outright fisheye to serious barrel fairly quickly as you move off 10mm and the distortion is easy to correct for if it's not wanted. I'm actually a very...

Ya, it's really inflexible. It's basically designed to maximize performance by removing the overhead of the TCP/IP stack (vs. iSCSI). You also don't to translate ATA commands to SCSI and back again if you use ATA disks. (Although I think, for SATA drives, Linux runs everything through SCSI...
