    Paypal experience and tips?

Well, the money's in the account. Or should I say that numbers are being displayed under a collection of letters like b-a-l-a-n-c-e. We'll see what happens now!

Help! what is this IBM SCA tray bolt?

What the heck is this pattern? It's the bolt holding a HDD to an SCA tray for an IBM server. Looks like a torx with the addition of a pin in the middle to defeat simple replacement! Is this a standard head pattern? Grrr....What's wrong with a bloody phillips head???

    Paypal experience and tips?

As I said, I don't know much about the actual business process with Paypal, and maybe there's something in the agreement about it, but what if everyone calls their money at once? Sounds like that's part of the problem: you can't necessarily take your money when you want to. Sounds like UPS...

    Paypal experience and tips?

Sounds like Paypal is hurting with the CC % cut and transaction fees, but they seem pretty high-handed about how they deal with the problem. I would've thought that for a company that provides a service only that things like service would be, um, important. I can't say that I fully understand...

    Paypal experience and tips?

Oh dear. So do I believe the people or the monkey? The escaped-from-parole-monkey no less. The linked website have a certain, um, rabid quality about them that scares me almost as much as the paypal horror stories they recount! I particularly like the "Devoted to stoping [sic] the MAFIA style"...

    Paypal experience and tips?

A friend just sold his mtn bike online, and has agreed to take payment via Paypal. My reaction to this form of payment (based, I admit, on an old and vaguely-recalled memory of it being a bit if a bear to get one's $s out of Paypal) has made him a little anxious. I'm feeling a little bad about...

    Aurora Borealis

Brilliant show here around 3am, certainly the best I've seen from here. Put some pics up here from our deck. I've never had the opportunity to photograph the aurora before, but maybe there'll be a repeat tonight. It's tough to figure out exposure to balance between a dark sky and a bright wash...

    XP Picture and Fax Viewer

I find Irfanview's UI to be really very good if I use the keyboard shortcuts. numeric + and - for zoom, enter for full screen, r for rotate, ctrl r for resize, t for directory thumbnails, etc, etc. It's much faster for me than the XP viewer. And it's free. And it's not from Redmond. I don't...

    Personal Finance Software

Stock and mutual fund price updates are important for me. I could carry on with the version I have for everything else, as I've become used to it, and it does what I need, but not having investment updates done automatically would drive me nuts. Have you tried using the budgets for projections...

    Personal Finance Software

Help! I was, until recently, a happy user of Quicken 99. Use it to track everything financial in my little world. Intuit, no doubt angry that I haven't upgraded, recently dropped downloads of stock quotes for Quicken versions pre-2001. I have been expecting this for a while, so I'm not...

    Any thoughts on this server?

buy what? Our company has a branch there. I can't figure out how the settlement got started, or at least how it lasted after the first winter. Explorer Bob arrives in late spring, confluence of two rivers, nice weather, a few bugs but not too bad. "Let's stay here for a bit" he says to his...

    My new monitor...happy happy

I was complaining about the abysmal quality of the Viewsonic P90f "Professional" series monitor here and Dïscfärm recommended the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB. I'm looking at one now as I type this, and it's wonderful. Crisp text edge to edge, colour is consistent, and lots of controls to...

    Any thoughts on this server?

Of course we pay GST and PST on goods purchased here too. I'm not sure about the treatment of goods from Taiwan or China, probably...

How do you get rid of the stupid Macromedia Flash pop-up?

There are some great uses of flash around, mostly artistic rather than commerce, and I guess god content would be important to see too, but the ads that make up most flash content drive me nuts. I'm currently using mozilla without flash (or cookies, or ad images, or popups) to view most sites...

HUGE price drop on some Samsung and NEC monitors

Which "P" series monitor? I've been happy with a PS790 for 3 years or so, but just bought a P90f, and am really disappointed. The sharpness is poor around the edges (and I'm talking about 2" around the edge, not the edge edge), and the colour consistency across the screen ain't great. I've gone...

    We need Pricewatch in Québec/canada.

Agreed. I think there was a Canadian area on Pricewatch a few years ago, but it disappeared. It probably didn't make it because of the very small number of online retailers here. I gave up searching around, and my fear of courier/gorillas made it an easy choice for me to get stuff from local...

UPS can get a signature and consider the job done. I can imagine how the call to UPS would go if your neighbour decided to feed your package to his dog (or use it as a frisbee). I've concluded from my experience with UPS that the U does indeed stand for useless.

Recommendations on good books to read

Another vote for Stephenson's Snow Crash here, just a wonderful journey. If you like hard science-fiction, try Stephen Baxter's Manifold novels. I've finished Manifold:Time and Manifold:Space so far, Manifold:Origin to go. These stories are big in scale, huge distances and times are routine...

    15. I like the idea of coming back after a bit if you need to. Posts would be marked as "edited" wouldn't they? Could there be an option to choose to view either edited posts or the "redlined" versions? (just a thought)

Unnatural? Hmmm. There's been a bunch of talk lately that Vancouver nightlife is kinda dull too. Of course there's a media push to show the "happening" side of Vancouver, which is just plain embarrassing. Actually, it's my preference for us to have this quiet rep. Fewer people will move in...

Pah, what's a little rain. Wuss. Actually, JSF has it about right on some of the day-to-day details of Vancouver, but I suspect that they're not that much different than many other 'top-ranking' cities. We all seem to want our cars and shops and plots of grass. I'm never quite sure about...

Stomp BUMP works fine; it does not have the formatting issue that NTI has. As Cliptin noted, it's similar to the native W2K backup program, and since I know that already, it's an easy choice for me.

    Vancouver, BC Information

Banff National Park is about 925 km east, so that's not doable. There's lots of hiking (and extreme mountain biking) in the mountains just north of the city. The...

    North shore Canada?

Actually, I think there's quite a bit of infrastructure for internet connectivity in the North. Lots of remote schools as well as company supplied stuff in the mining + oil camps. I know I'd want to make darn sure that there was a decent connection if I were to take a job up North. Not sure...

IIRC when I looked at NTI, it simply refused to do anything but a complete format every backup, and required user intervention at each backup to deal with this, which just didn't seem right, darnit. I did not spend a huge amount of time with it. You're very keen on it time, so I'll take...

jtr1962, I found something that might work: http://www.emsproject.com/FS Seems to block the ie "install flash" popup along with the other popups it can block. Incidentally, I found this at the Ars Technica forum in the Software Colloquium. There's lots of goodies there...

How do you get rid of the stupid Macromedia Flash pop-up?

Ick, I see what you mean now. I had flash installed so I took it out to see what you saw; It's the security certificate thingey, which I guess is a system thing not an ad, so it's not blocked. In this case, I'm not sure which is better, flash out and the popups or flash in and the ads. The ads...

Well, I've just downloaded the demo and tried a number of backups here at home, and the program always does a full format, the option for a quick format is greyed out even after repeated backups with the same media.
