Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

I don't really have much knowledge of the older cars(say, 70's or earlier). Also, I can't justify why the US citizens have those "big blocks" in their cars (I do mean the engines). The fuel economy must really suck, if You're driving a car that weights over two tons, and has a 5 liter V8. I'm...

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

IIRC, double-clutching was used on older trucks that didn't have syncros. When downshifting You'd first press the clutch and put it to neutral. Then You'd depress clutch, press it back to the bottom, throttle in appropriate revs and at last, shift to the lower gear. I wouldn't recommend...

    Fans, fans, fans

The problem with fans sucking air in is that the case must then be air proof. If it isn't, less hot air comes out the box. This is why "all" fans suck the air out. You can buy some filters, put they make more noise and You have to wash them frequently or they will clog. What most of You haven't...

    fanless computer design

NOTE: I'm not defending here: AMD has a list of the "recommended" products. Fortron is on the list. Actually my Enermax has the same power fluctuations. I use vCool, and every time processor is not idle the fan(s) do throttle up, at least the one attached to the motherboard. I haven't...

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

Diesel engines are somewhat heavier, so the weight load/distribution is different. Diesel engines have great low-rpm torque, but the newer ones with turbos have small rpm-range right after the idle revs where there is low torque. So You'd have to have 1300+ rpm until the "real" torque starts. Jan

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

Yes, also the clutch might burn, but the transmission/gear box fails during the lifespan of the car. Some models have "better" or "more suitable" gear boxes (as VAG only has 6-9 different gear boxes), so by selecting the right model (even the year can make a difference) or not pushing it to the...

    fanless computer design

True, a bit of googlin' told me that this is actually a Fortron/Sparkle PSU, and XP Direct has the 350W model $45+s/h, and NewEgg has the 300W for as low as $32 including shipping. Too bad I live in Europe... Jan

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

You can chip any car of VAG that has a turbo, but doing so will in most cases (if You really max it) kill the transmission. Not immediately, but in five years or so. I tend to use motor braking whenever I can. And usually, in a full stop I put the gear in neutral, and put it back right before...

    fanless computer design

The problem with heat pipes is that they need some heat to work. The phase change starts bit over 30 degrees Celsius, but at a lower (less than maximum) effiency. I think the optimum temperature is near (or even over) 40 degrees, and the effiency gets better as the temperature increases up to a...

    fanless computer design

Hush Technologies has pretty much same idea, the only differences are that Hush's creation supports only VIA EPIA/EDEN motherboards (or other future Mini-ITX boards), and uses heat pipes to ensure silent operation. I can't really tell from the pictures of Whisper PC, but I think that it has a...

    2 Nforce2 or ¬ 2 Nforce2

Overclocking little bit too much (so that the computer doesn't crash immediately) gave me BIOS checksum error in my old 440BX-based computer. BIOS offered to "fix" the problem with a floppy with BIOS file (so the boot block was still ok). I didn't flash my BIOS at the time, so I knew it wasn't...

    WD400JB Just Died

The "all drives seem to be $hiT" is just statistical error (while forgetting the 75GXP and some design errors). When people started buying the WDs, surely "more" WD users will report of broken drives, since there is more of them in use. Samsung drives have good track record, since the volume of...

True, but I'm using Antec 1030B case. It has 2x80 mm fans below the PSU, right next to the processor, so I'd estimate that over 80 % of exhaust is going through those fans. I'd like to put the sensor under my CPU heat sink. SilentPCReview tested some Antec PSU that had the "Fan only" header, and...

If your board is "SOYO SY-K7V DRAGON Plus!", it should support S3. The setting should be under "Power Management Setup". "ACPI Suspend Type" is the option here in the manual. nForceFX chipset for Socket-A duallie

I'd put my two cents (if I had some!) on just one Gbit NIC. The other one is from the chipset, and it's likely to be "just" 10/100. Does anyone have preliminary info on the nForce FX chipset? Or some info on the Intel's ICH5? I'd really like to know whether either one will have southbridge...

Blakerwry, You really need to dig out the motherboard's manual. If You enable S3 suspend mode (STR, or Suspend To RAM) from BIOS, You can suspend the computer and it goes completely off. No fans, no hard disks, no nothing. Only RAM is at slow refresh. Once You turn the computer back on...

Bluetooth is OK to use in mobile market. Bluetooth HF kit is nice, as is syncing the calendar without the hassle of cables or IR. The range is quite small, less than 10 meters in free air. As You mentioned, the transfer rates are low: bluetooth has 1 mbps theoretical, and with the frequency...

Hardware innovations you'd like to see become mainstream

I think we're going to see Wi-Fi gear. Intel wants us to use it, most of the new laptop chipsets have Wi-Fi integrated. BlueTooth shares the same frequency bandwidth (at least with the 11 mbps Wi-Fi version), so they don't mix up very well. Cheers, Jan

Got any better protocol? The key for TV/computer linkage (or pretty much any link, like controlling the lights/AC/heating of your house with computer) is the communication protocol.
