Building a home NAS - feedback on build

You don't need a CPU that is anything other than slow and cheap for a file server. You will rarely be CPU bound.

    Something Random

I'm not saying it is a fatal flaw. Rather, it is something to consider and the manufacturers are likely to switch sockets to the brands that do not do that over time. So, I think, it will be self correcting. Coug, you may be correct that the motherboards boards may prove to be more fragile...

Well, I wouldn't be buying into 1156 till this issue gets resolved. It will take a while, but the manufacturers will get their act together over the next few months.

    Windows 7 nonsense

I'm pretty sure that the version of Win 7 used determines the OEM vs. Retail status rather than the status of the previous OS. Especially since Win 7 does not upgrade Win XP directly but rather it simply wipes the drive and installs clean.

    nVidia exits the chipset business

Absolutely! There is nothing in the AMD arena that is even close to the performance of the Intel i7 processors. The extreme top AMD processors are just now starting to get performance parity to the bottom-mid C2D processors.

    Windows 7 nonsense

I have not done it yet, but I believe that you do not need an operational XP install, rather you need an original XP CD which it will ask for. I don't believe Windows 7 upgrade actually upgrades an XP install, rather it becomes a wipe and replace scenario. If you search the web, there are...

    Strange Startup Problem

First, the slowness of the power-on process indicates that perhaps your CPU speed has defaulted to a non-standard value. This can happen on some motherboards when they, for some reason, decide that the CPU was overclocked to the point of instability and then it resets the multiplier and/or...

    Internet hacking

I was very impressed with Comcast in this instance. By my calculations it took them around 15 minutes to shut it down from when the said they would. They were courteous, efficient, and took the problem seriously. I have nothing to complain about.

    PC Powers on Randomly

Have you checked the log? If both machines are on the same circuit then the log (on the input side) should apply to both machines. Other than the CMOS settings I don't know what would cause such behavior other than a general bios failure. Have you tried resetting the CMOS to default/optimized...

    Internet hacking

I would definitely agree that it is most likely a compromised machine. However, I do have information on my network that is confidential enough that I can't allow outside access. So I am serious about keeping it secure. My assumptions was that they would lock out the modem, and then force the...

    nVidia exits the chipset business

You are behind the times: Intel current C2d and i7 CPU's are now significantly more powerful than AMD's offerings. That being said, AMD is successfully marking out territory in the cost-effective budget class. Perhaps your market is limited to relatively low-end machines and in that case your...

Well, I think (hope) I made someone unhappy. nVidia exits the chipset business

Sorry to disagree but I think of this as generally bad. For the same reason I really don't want AMD to die, is why I don't want Nvidia to fail. Competition is good, and monopolies are generally bad for society. This is definitely heading in the direction towards a monopoly.

Well, I do have opinions in this subject. There are lots of variables, and little details, so it is hard to talk concretely about lots of stuff. However, since this appears to be your first foray, there are some common issues. The first is that Hyper-V has limited Linux support. So...

    Slow disk

    Weird networking configuration question

At the very minimum you would have to do that: You need two way communication between the networks for the internet to work. Ideally, I would want the routers to be configured with NAT so that the 192.168.2.x network addresses are converted to 192.168.0.x addresses when they get to the...
