    Thoughts about educational systems

Or do better on the LSAT test. It is your personal choice to fold: I'm not trying to push it. I donate my computer cycles (and electricity) because I believe in the cause not because I wish to support Stanford.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Greg, There is nothing wrong with your thinking other than it is now several years out of date. The setup you are describing, at one time, would have been a screamer. Today, there is just plain better technology. With multi-core technology, you no longer need multiple CPU's to make your...

SSDs - State of the Product?

For a rough estimate, with that config you should be able to get around 34K points per day: For folding you are significantly better off with Nvidia rather than ATI right now. Also Linux is better than Windows but running linux in VM(s) works fine.

SSDs - State of the Product?

No, Playstation 3's are not bad but with what Stanford is testing right now (and I shouldn't be talking about it) is designed for these and much bigger machines. Theoretically, with a big enough machine we are talking 500,000+ points per day. I'd really like to play with those. Right now if...

I personally would like a big Xeon monster for folding (which would keep those CPU's very busy) but I could never ever rationalize such a purchase.

    You are absolutely correct here.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Greg, when comparing Xeons with different architectures you need to include more variables than just their clock speeds. You need at least to include how many instructions they can do at the same clock. But there are far more variable than just that. I suggest that you try to compare using...

    Virtual Box

I tried it when it went to v3. I stopped when I couldn't SMP fold on it because it will only allow a single CPU when running 64 bit linux under a 32 bit host (XP). VMWare server does not have that limitation ...

    Chrome OS

It is my understanding, from what I've read, that it will be very limited in scope. The OS will be designed for netbooks using a very limited version Linux with only enough to run the Chrome browser. Applications will be designed to be run off the browser similar to Google Apps. With that...

I've been playing around with Google Chrome. It is noticeably faster than any other browser that I've tried. It does what is needed for a basic browser, but does nothing fancy nor are there any addons to improve capabilities.

    Printing an army of PDFs

To me this appears to be one of the more stupid decisions I have recently heard of. I can't think a reason why one would prefer paper over CD's. I know, he doesn't like PDF's! After they are all printed, he's going to ask you to scan them all in and run OCR on them so they are all poorly...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Generally yes, but sometime you just can't split the workload up and you just have to buy the bigger single box. The cost to deveop custom software required to split the workload is cost prohibative except for the likes of google.

SSDs - State of the Product?

There is a premium to UD3, but it is not that much (maybe $80-100) on the scale of the total system cost. For the most part I'm willing to pay that for a MB that will last more than two years: I really try to buy for the long haul. But yes, you are correct that low-priced and more frequent...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm not disagreeing, but one does pay a premium for that. Also, when I bought the MB's, Gigabyte did not have marketting that identified reliability yet. So for the most part, other than price, one didn't really know what MB's were designed for reliability and which ones were not. I just took...

SSDs - State of the Product?

All my Gigabyte 939 motherboards are showing significant capacitor issues. Of the six only two will run at all, and they take multiple trys just to power up the machines. However, if they can get up and running, they will generally stay that way for weeks. Post is a real killer here.

Mine didn't but I DL'ed ie8 rather than using the update. That is unacceptable to some (those clients that are paranoid about the technical max activation limit of twice) that I've run into before.

Copying it to the clipboard works fine, but I shouldn't have to do that. Rather that problem is me remembering to do that before pressing the compatability button. The ie8 problem definately occurs in the quick reply box (here and elsewhere) shortly after the scroll bars appear.

IE 8 for WinXP available on the windows update site.

I've been running it for a while, and generally I like it. However, It really does not like the quick reply boxes for forums. When the box gets full and there is a need to scroll it starts acting peculiar. However in compatability mode those boxes work fine but if you have a message in that...

If you can't afford a monopod, try converting your current tripod: Don't open up the legs and shorten up two of them so that only one is on the ground. Come on, you are already invested in Canon. Unless you want to replace all your lenses then you are stuck: that's the whole point of proprietary mounts. So why even go there. At the top end, the differences are just not enough to throw away the lens investment. Further, there's always the...

Also, after ATA-33, the interfaces have always been much faster than the drives, so the interface was not really a limiter. Drive-level caching really won't help when doing either of the above two senareo's because it is just plain way too small. Really drive level caching only helps if the...
