    More Vista nonsense

IMO UAC doesn't break software. It exposes poorly written software for the crap that it is. Software that stood a decent chance of failing on a properly hardened XP system. That some of that software would come from MS is no great surprise considering their heinous past (and Great Plains was...

    Mileage, Safety, Affordability: Pick Two

IIRC Indiana banned driving-while-headphoned in the late 70s/early 80s when Walkmen first became popular. In essence you're ability to hear emergency vehicle sirens, honking horns, and any other audible indicators of changing traffic conditions is greatly impaired.

    Mileage, Safety, Affordability: Pick Two

I've got to leave for a bit, but compare that Renault to a Chevy Aveo. The Aveo still only gets about 70% of the MPG and I can't see the Aveo being that different in size/weight.

    Mileage, Safety, Affordability: Pick Two

Yeah, I was just thinking of the new Pontiac G8 which is a Holden. But the more amazing thing is that a government reduced a tax. My father drove a Renault in the '80s. I won't claim it was the most spacious or safe thing but he got 50MPG consistently. With over 100K miles he gave it to me...

    Mileage, Safety, Affordability: Pick Two

I haven't read the article, but my first thought is F*** the cost. While I firmly believe the MPG desires of both the EPA & California are achievable, I would not do so at the cost of reduced (or not increased) safety. Increases in purchase price will be at least partially offset over the life...

    Seagate Circuit Board Replacement

IIRC Merc used to do that. As long as the logic board is from the exact same drive it should work. Ideally it would have the same firmware level but that's probably not mandatory. In the future, beware that some drives, and Seagate is the first one offering this, will do on-drive encryption...

    Virtualized OS & Multicore CPUs

Its definitely possible. IBM does it on their POWER hardware (POWER5 & 6 CPUs). Assign a partition to have an exact whole number of cores and it becomes essentially dedicated. But then that partition can't take part in dynamic movement of CPU between partitions. There is a minor performance...

That's the Advanced Columbus Method. I'm a practitioner as well. Standard Columbus Method is "find it and land on it." I've used microcomputers, minicomputers, and the odd mainframe since 1981 and have never learned to be a touch-typist. I can pluck out 45+ WPM but have to look at the...

Dieing 21" Hitachi 802 plus What to replace it with?

Time, I presume you're considering the 19" runs at 1440x900, in which case I agree the pixel density is about the same as a 22" @ 1680x1050. But 1440x900 @ 19" is not sufficient pixel density for me. For me, 1440x900 is also simply not enough resolution. Not enough data fits on the screen...

Dieing 21" Hitachi 802 plus What to replace it with?

Somewhere around here you'll find some rants about the various types of display panels. Many of the inexpensive flat panels use a cheaper panel type-PVA I think it was-that has a more limited viewing angle when compared to TFT. Possibly other drawbacks. Also, the inexpensive panels tend to be...

Ninja Star or Throwing Star would be more appropriate. I've never heard them called Kung Fu stars. Probably because it's totally wrong. For one, shuriken are Japanese; Kung Fu is Chinese. Well, it's all Asian, so I guess they're close enough.

That's correct. And if the test bed had included as much then it would be important to note them. As part of a system, the power draw of the CPUs & FB-RAM would be trivialized by the power draw of the storage array making the power analysis of less relative value compared to, say, using 10K or...

Other than heat/power, I don't know that the 9300 will be different from the the 6600. The 9300 is .1 GHz faster and has the faster bus but it only has 75% of the cache of the 6600. I'm guessing it's close to a wash.
