Program Files Folder Mixup; XP Won't Boot

I don't hold any great hope for solving this problem. I even have doubts that an inplace reinstall would fix it because of the registry issues (It normally keeps non-HW registry entries alone). It is a try, and it is better than just starting over I really don't know the registry entries that...

I think when trying to take interesting people photo's what is most needed is genuine emotion being expressed and that is a very hard thing to capture. It is that emotion that makes the photographic message believable.

Why is the site always slow?

Sometimes the site is very bad (typically at night): I think that's when they do backups. You can tell when it is at its worst when there are lots of double posts. Most of the time it is sluggish, but acceptable. Right now it is quick. The pattern has been that way for years.

Colbert for Toilet or ISS wing? (Yuk)

Colbert didn't want a toilet named after him: That was NASA's reaction after he won, as a write-in, the naming contest for the new upcoming wing of the ISS.

Lets see, That there were so few cared enough to vote. That Colbert even tried. That Colbert succeeded. That NASA wants to get even. That NASA Isn't willing to accept the election, that NASA feels the appropiate thing is to imortalize Colbert by naming a toilet after him. That a toilet is...

    better Nvidia drivers for folding?

Basicly, they were not trying to fix the increased PPD, but rather they are striving to fix a bug that showed up with 185.20 drivers and the unfortunately the increased PPD was the casuality. Mastter of fact, the added thread syncronation needed has slightly decreased PPD for all drivers.

    Optimising for very small files

It depends on how often the SSD gets written to. If the application is still getting more of these files, then yes you will need an Intel drive to eliminate pauses. If it has become basicly read only then you can get away with a lower-end SSD. Here is a very good article on SSD performance...

    Optimising for very small files

I think this is a very good application for the use of an SSD. They are so small and so many, it is highly unlikely that they are read sequentially which means you are seek limited: raid-0 is unlikely to produce a large benefit and it also means the smaller the stripe size the better. I agree...

    Quiet and Rackmount?

It is possible, that the excessive noise is because the AC doesn't work! In an enclosed rack w/o air conditioning, the temps can get rather excessive requiring all those small fans, in all your machines, to whirr at very excessive RPMs to produce adequate cooling. One simple test may be to...

Upgrading RAM: ECC or non ECC?

No, even with chipkill there was a latency cost for calculating the ECC to make sure that there was no error: It was just small (3-5%) because of using HW instead of SW/FW (15-30%) to do the calculaions. This penalty was in addition to any buffering cost. The problem is that that was quite a...

Upgrading RAM: ECC or non ECC?

There is always a latency associated with ECC: Needed to actually calculate the error correcting code. There is a difference between HW ECC (i.e. chipkill) and software ECC (BIOS claculated). My point is that the slowdown is not BW associated and the real question is how much.
