I wish I could nab more systems, but I'm presently rather maxed out. I'll check with some of the folks at work & see if I can run the services client on their PCs. I see there's a PPC OS X version. That should make for an easy port to AIX, and hence i5/OS. Maybe I'll email them and ask about...

    Dell 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect LCD, $679.15

I for one really like the wide screens. My laptop has a 1900x1200 LCD. It's great for browsing and having multiple windows up. Or doing facing pages in Word or Acrobat Reader. That said, I'm not a gamer and couldn't say how the non-4:3 aspect would look in a game setting. I also don't have...

    Corporate Antivirus Solution of Choice?

Not necessarily what I would use, but at work we use Network Associates/McAfee Enterprise. If I were doing it, Kaspersky, CA eTrust, etc. would be evaluated. I wouldn't consider McAfee or anything from Symandrec.

    Death of a Deskstar

Good frickin' question. First would be to decide if I want to remove them from their AS/400 drive mountings or not. If so, I'll sort them by maker & generation. Regardless of mountings, after I offer a firesale to anyone here I'll likely ebay the rest. Oh, a pair of AIT2 tape drives and...

    Teaching Linux

Expanding a little on sechs' comment, another thing that I think is vitally important for the students to realize is that the GUI is not a part of the OS itself; it's a bolt-on app just like Apache, etc. After covering issues like partition management and installation methods, I'd say cover...

News: IBM Selling Personal Computer Unit

IBM will lose some customers who want an end-to-end solution provider as they will no longer offer end-to-end products. Some of those customers will be users of IBM's services as well, so they will probably lose some services business as part of the fall out. I'm sure IBM has weighted the...

News: IBM Selling Personal Computer Unit

Personally, I think this is a mistake. Many companies (like my employer) standardize on a single brand for all PC products - desktops, laptops, and servers. If the desktops & laptops aren't available, why would these companies continue to buy IBM servers? I think IBM would do better to...

    Guide to crappy xmas carols

Christmas-related items started appearing in stores back in September. About two or three weeks ago one Chicagoland radio station went xmas tunes all the time; they do that every year. People need to stop buying into it. It's become a retailer's wet dream and a credit card issuer's windfall...

    Uninstalling NAV Corporate Ver 8.0

One thing I've found which makes a huge speed difference on AV packages is whether or not archive files are being scanned. For ZIPs the impact isn't noticeable, but if you run any Java, the Jar files will be scanned whever the Java app runs and that's a huge hit on performance.

another PC building question (hope you're not sick of them)

I agree as well. I'm not a volume person when it comes to buying PC upgrades, though, so once a company burns me I avoid them for a long time. There are plenty of other companies with equivalent products to use as alternatives. Once they've burned me ( ) I'll give the first one another...

    Mobile Phones

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I'm not anticipating it being too much of a problem for me as I don't have a huge contact list & I run most apps of the SD card vs. internal RAM. My data usage shouldn't be much of a problem under the new architecture. My T600 has over 14MB free; if that drops below...

    [NEWZ] Svelte Monster: 3-Platter 400 GB 7200.8

I think they should, though, market them as 130 & 260 GB. Price it the same as the competition and say for the same $ you get 10 more GB and the 5 year warranty.

    Has anyone ever used . . .

At 100Mb Ethernet or any WiFi, the performance difference will probably be too small to notice as USB2 is faster than either. If you're running Gb Ethernet, then your Dell will likely take the performance crown. Certainly I was commenting WRT a consumer solution since RW didn't mention this...

looking for suggestions for a business PC

Get the gold warranty if you want support to not suck. Dell desktops are adequate; we use them here at work. Can't say I like them that much as they still tend to favor proprietary case designs & BIOSes. But they seem to work OK. 3.2GHz & 1GB RAM to surf, do light word processing &...

From the threads that've been posted, I'd say a decent number of the regulars have moved in the past year or two. I'm at 2.5 years in our humble abode. After refinancing, only 341 mortgage payments to go!

I've got similar support in my Netgear router. Up to 26 drives via USB hubs, supposedly. And I believe it uses FAT32. Personally, while the idea of NASLite (and Smoothwall for that matter) is intriguing, I don't think I'd want to devote a whole PC with it's incumbent issues (power...

    Paypal experience and tips?

I'm sure that, similar to a bank, PayPal invests the majority of the account balances in various devices to earn additional interest/profit. Paypal experience and tips?

Actually, I've used PayPal numerous times and am verified against one of my checking accounts. But that's not to say I currently care for the service. My opinion is that it has steadily gone downhill. I maintain maybe $30 balance in my account there; not enough to fret over losing. It's...

Tell it to the judge. Or, should I say tell it to those thousands of couples who were married by judges, court clerks, mayors, etc. The requirements for a ceremony & to be legally married have nothing to do with religion. Maybe an alternative would be for a new religion to start up. One that...
