    Walmart's $598 ECS Wonder-Laptop

Dell gold corporate support will have the laptop fixed in a day or two. Been there; done that, although with hard drives & not with a beverage. But we're a very good customer (several hundred servers + thousands of desktops/notebook, everything replaced every 3-4 years) so we do get good...

    Certifications

Well, for starters I am getting that new laptop. :) Even if there's no raise associated with it, my employer paid for the class ($2600) & the test ($500) and will generally pay for most things related to maintaining a certification like this. For CISSP that includes 140 CPE credits over 3...

Yes, we do, but as I near 40 my vision still tests at 20-20. My current laptop does 1600x1200 on the 15" screen. The new one would be a widescreen. Also, my primary viewing is actually the external CRT, which is a 21" Dell (Trinitron) running 1600x1200. I use the native XP functionality (in...

    Walmart's $598 ECS Wonder-Laptop

The D600 actually is our corporate standard laptop. Doesn't seem too bad, but that screen would get to me over time. The apps I run really like lots of resolution. My boss probably won't care unless I go decently north of $4K. With that in mind, so far I'm looking at a D800 with the 2GHz CPU...

    Walmart's $598 ECS Wonder-Laptop

Just today my boss told me to order a new laptop. This is to replace my 1.6GHz P4M, 1GB RAM, 40GB disk, etc. that I detailed a long time ago in some thread I'm too lazy to dig up. It's about 2.5 years old and everything basically works. The HD is pokey but otherwise it's a decent performer...

Done! It's a painful test*, but I passed first time around. I took the Common Body of Knowledge class in June and the test in July. Found out I passed. Got another CISSP to endorse my credentials (verifies work experience, etc.). Even then ISC2 reserves the right to audit and reject...

    Changing drive letters?

Sounds more like a prob with FC that Palm Desktop. With FC installed, search the registry for "C:\Progra" or other strings to see if you can find where they're overriding the settings. Back to Palm, I don't know if Palm Desktop supports SP2 yet. You may try some of the Palm forums around the...

When considering Dell laptops, always go with Latitude over Inspiron. Latitude machines for some reason have the better engineering. While my employer buys Dells, we have standardized on the Latitudes after numberous issues with the Inspirons.

Her daughter will be in college for 4 years. The laptop is now covered for 4 years. For her, making sure the laptop was covered the entire time her daughter is in school was easily the right thing to do. A single service issue (cracked screen, blown hard drive, Coke-in-keyboard) and it will...

True about the HP, but my direct experience with non-Dell laptops has been pretty much nil since around 1999 when I worked on a Compaq P133. I'm prepared to be open-minded about the HP and so far (after about 3 weeks), her daughter loves it. I'll get feedback over time to see if she has any...

Yes. Even 256MB results in too much paging with more than 1 app open. Plus, the RAM in this unit is shared with video so you won't even have the full 128MB available. A coworker recently purchased a laptop for her daughter, who was going off to college. The college's minimum specs was 2GHz...

I understand the desire to use the 108Mb mode; that's the path I took. I plunked down the $ for a 311T card for my wife's desktop to get beyond the b mode of her old D-Link USB thumb and get an adapter with WPA support. My laptop has the 511T and the router is the 634U. So I'm safe in...

Should I buy a Seagate HDD?

I have 1 Maxtor ATA, 1 Quantum SCSI, 1 Samsung ATA, 1 WD ATA, and 1 Seagate SCSI. For purposes of my comparison I'll add Quantum & Maxtor together. None of the drives have failed. As such, I must come to the conclusion that Maxtor drives are twice as reliable as the other brands and are...

    Another reason I like AS/400s

Really? That's good to see as I was wondering how the performance would be. Every iteration of the hardware, especially since they went RISC, has been a big step forward. Power5 is probably the biggest yet. Not only in terms of raw performance but the functionality they keep adding...

    Another reason I like AS/400s

Well, some people insist on 32 bits instead of 64. So if they need Windows or x86 Linux, we wrap it up inside the iSeries and make it fairly resilient. OS/400 controls it. :) It has it's own CPU & RAM so it doesn't drag iSeries performance. It shares tape & CD/DVD resources and OS/400...

    Another reason I like AS/400s

Yep, you do pay more. The UPGRADE I'm pricing out has a discounted price just shy of $600K for one of our systems. But then that includes 3.2TB of 15K RPM SCSI goodness (51 70GB disks in RAID5). And the new disk controllers have 1GB read cache & 757MB write cache. 4 of those will be used: 1...

[NEWS] - Maxtor boosts SATA HDD cache to 16MB

Oh no, I'm sure they're targeting the self-described enthusiasts. You know, the ones that always equates more to better. The ones that buy the latest $300 graphics cards to play 4 year old games becuase they can get 12x the framerate that their eyes can actually detect.

    Antiques

My best antiques would be an IBM PC-XT motherboard with CPU & RAM. I think it even has the Cassette adapter/connector. That and a copy of Microsoft OS/2 (by HP). The irony of MS OS/2 is just too good, so I can't throw that out. Most everything else I've junked or otherwise divested myself of...

How come this forum doesn't allow editing?

There are still consistency problems with that approach. A sequence like: 1. I make a post. 2. I start to edit that post to change the content. 3. You open the thread/post to view. 4. I submit my edited post. would have you viewing the unedited post. And if you responded to that content...

I'm not entirely sure I see the point. I guess I'm with Buck on this one. Also, I presume they still had to run power lines everywhere (or set up big solar collectors); wouldn't that mess things up a bit? Can the average wireless NIC broadcast through the trees to the APs? Or is the AP side...

    News: XP SP2 is out

One thing I read today is that IBM is advising against installation on their 400,000 desktops. Supposedly they will have a custom version done to work around some already known problems. The problems, BTW, are WRT some IBM internal apps and not general purpose stuff. Personally, I'll wait a...
