    Zit woes

I had a mass, or puss-infected lump, on my back earlier this year. It was nearly 3" across. Not very high but somewhat deep & right over my spinal column. It was so sensitive I couldn't lean back in a chair let along sleep on my back. Since my wife is a vampire by trade* she stuck a clean...

    Password Manager

AES is a current, highly secure encryption algorithm. A block cipher is appropriate for this kind of data, and a 256 bit key is probably overkill for personal use; quite good for corporate use. It'd probably take years to brute-force a decryption key. The better (longer, random) the...

    Spam filters

I just now went and downloaded a few more filters for Spamihilator. Maybe that'll ease the burden some. Just noticed the Oulook add-in to flag senders as friend or foe from within Outlook - nice! To firm up what I mentioned above, Spamihilator's stats show an average of 192 spams/day.

    Spam filters

I've been using Spamhilator + Outlook Pro 2000 at home for some months now. Overall I like the combo, but Spamhilator needs some additional flexibility / rules capability to make it a hands-down recommendation. I have 2 main accounts at my domain + an "anyone at" account for everything else...

    I need a new TV

Chicagoland is fairly flat & some stations have their antennae on the top of skyscrapers anyway (CBS is on the Sears Tower). So maybe OTA HD isn't too far fetched. Yes, the DVL-919 is an Elite. I still have around 100 movies + 125 or so anime LDs. While I've converted a few to DVD, I keep...

I don't believe they do Telegraphs anymore and, last I heard, they were divesting themselves of long distance. Didn't they sell their cel market to Cingular? If so, does AT&T still do telephony at all?

Sorry; should be "Visions ... have" instead of "has". At least I caught it before the grammar police. That was my general impression as well. When discussing the whole 'let's get another TV' thing with my wife, it has been along the lines of two choices: Cheap SDTV (maybe $400-500) or very...

    I need a new TV

Yeah, I know. Visions of cheap RCA / Thomson / Philips garbage has danced through my head. Online reviews of the combo seem to be in short supply. But as a 'starter set' for $800, even if it doesn't last that long or the pic isn't as good as the brand new Mitsu DLPs (very, very nice. Better...

The subject had mostly died off for a while, but a recent visit to Radioshack brought it back to life. It appears Dish Network has an interesting offer for $799: - 1 HD Satellite decoder that also accepts & decodes over-the-air HD broadcasts & includes an antenna. - 1 34" or 40" HDTV monitor...

    New Notebook

For my company, Inspirons have been less than spectacular when it comes to reliability. Hence, we standardized on the Latitude lineup and I didn't bother to check out Inspirons. That said, I do know a couple of people who have purchased Inspirons through the company discount plan and haven't...

    New Notebook

To make it compact and weigh under around 4 pounds, you'll have to sacrifice the internal optical drive. If you can do that you'll have many choices, like the Dell Latitude D400. Otherwise, you'll be 'stuck' with a 14"+ screen and a larger (4.5 pound+) unit (Latitude D505 or D600). (I only...

You'll definitely enjoy it. Your specs are very similar to my new Dell. I've got nVidia 5650 graphics & a 1920x1200 LCD and I've no idea who makes the GB of RAM, but the other specs you posted match my new toy, er, workstation replacement right on. I think you'll like it a lot. With XP SP2...

Copying from one location to another

No, the discussion involved the drive having sufficient logic to do the file copy on it's own. That implies minimal commands from the controller/OS on the order of 'there's a file starting here; copy it to this other place'. I'm saying the difficulty involved in the implementation outweighs...
  36. F

Copying from one location to another

Nope. Can't do that becuase the drive is handling the transaction; not the OS or controller. My point is that, for all situations other than a standalone drive, the complexity required to maintain integrity goes way up. You can't easily take the intelligence away from the controller and OS...

80 MB/sec not enough on today's SCSI controllers?

For me, that's not a large enough improvement to justify spending the extra $ of a new controller & cable. Especially since Adcadet said STR isn't as important for what he does. Unless the controller was sufficiently cheap, of course. Depends on Adcadet's budget.

80 MB/sec not enough on today's SCSI controllers?

LSI chipsets are on at least some of the SCSI cards in my AS/400s. I don't think I could make a better recommendation. SR's current 15K leaders haven't hit 80MB/s (although they're close). I doubt the new generation will be so much faster that it'll exceed 80MB/s by a great deal. Probably...

I'd doubt the Slim Width as all of the drives available for the laptop are slim width. Actually, Slim Height is more accurate. Slim Width would imply it wouldn't accept 12cm discs. So maybe it's a mini-disc drive.

Is a browser cache worthwhile with broadband?

I'd leave the cache on but reduce it to 10 or 20MB. If your cache is currently rather large, doing that should eliminate HD delays. I think it'll run better that way than with either a large cache or no cache whatsoever. I also normally set the history to something relatively low like 10 days.
