Looking for 200GB or larger hard drives

For the same $ you can get the 120GB/8MB SATA drive. But I don't consider that to be much of a deal. re: 4x2.5" in a 5.25" bay: Even if they were SATA the cabling wouldn't be pretty.

Well, I could pick up one or four for you and drop 'em off the next time I come to Indiana if you want. We're tentative for driving to Michigan City on the 13th. Or, standard shipping for 1 is $6 and add a buck for each additional.

We generally buy from PRP Wine as they hold local tastings and warehouse sales. Excellent customer service. As my wife & I both tend to like sweeter wines, we favor Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese or even a Beerenauslese. For reds we almost always go with Travicello. Since these are fairly...

I recently picked up the Netgear WTG624. Been working great so far and from certain etailers it has a $25 rebate (through June 30), which made my cost about $65. Signal strength has been excellent on both my laptop (using an also-new Netgear WG511T) in G-mode and my wife's PC upstairs, which...

Casual observation about ads on regular (NTSC) TV

As studios make the transition to HD recording, widescreen will become the norm. Many shows are shot in HD and just down-converted to Never Twice Same Color. That commercials are appearing WS shouldn't be too much of a surprise; they show those on HD channels, too, don't they?

Hayashibara Megumi and Namie Amuro lately on the j-pop side of the house. Why do I think few forum members will have even heard of them? :) For US music, my wife recently got me the Billy Joel 1973-1997 Comeplte Hits set, which is pretty decent. Radio in the car, when not news, is classic...

Nothing exact. It's an estimate based on a few things: 1. Sales of other homes in the subdivision (one went in December for 20% more than my estimated increase, although it was a slightly larger house with a couple of amenities our place lacks) 2. Increased assessed value (in theory unrelated...

My home town would be Indy, where housing costs are probably a little more than Merc's but a fair bit less than mine. OK, length of ownership was mentioned. I should add that I bought my mortgage, er, house, 2 years ago and since then it has appreciated around 8 or 9 percent. The only...

Anybody else still holding out on WinXP SP1?

My laptop is still pre-SP1. I tried SP1 but it for some crazy reason broke the Terminal Services client, which I need for my job. Others have not had this problem, though, so it may be something odd in my particular setup. I've also been considering giving it another go, but since I keep up...

    Wireless router/switch: Wireless not working

They sent another firmware rev for me to try and it, too, failed to make a difference. I'll keep working with them to see if it can be fixed but I needed something in the mean time so I just bought the Netgear WGT624. If I get the SMC going it'll do as a backup. I like the Netgear's setup a...

    What the.......

I think the easiest way to verify the files are good would be to fill the all of the space on all partitions with really big videos, preferably w/o any dupes, and scan through them as you were doing above. It should show curruption more easily than trying to verify lots of small files.

    Wireless router/switch: Wireless not working

I just submitted a lightly edited version of my first post in this thread to SMC support. We'll see if they have any suggestions. I suppose I don't mind replacing it with a faster wireless solution, but I don't really need the extra bandwidth and I hate to toss electronics in the landfill.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

Our standard server is a Dell PE2650 with dual Xeons, 2GB RAM, and 4 36GB SCSI disks. We see SQL Server occasionally developing a memory leak or something. When it happens, RAM allocation jumps to 1.7GB so if the budget allows, some additional system RAM might be good. Otherwise, to refine...

Several mention it as part of the product details on their sites. D-link and LinkSys, for example. Or do these fall into the "the-hardware-supports-it-but-we-won't-write-the-firmware-for-another-9-months" category?

OK, so I'll avoid D-link. Theire USB 802.11b NIC works well, though. Anyway, assume Netgear or Linksys or any other company other than SMC & D-Link. Hmm. What about US Robotics, Netgear, or Hawking? The LinkSys is a tad more expensive and has the shortest warranty.

and Nice. Direct: All reads are pass-through and are cached so subsequent reads of the same data create a cache hit. Maybe. It could mean reads aren't cached at all depending on how you interpret it; i.e. the buffer is merely used as a pass-through channel so the electronics don't have to...

I've been working on AS/400s since 1991 and haven't heard of feature code 2212. Seeing as it comes with TN3270 vs. TN5250, I'd think it would be found in a mainframe environment vs. AS/400. 400's do 3270, but 5250 is the native interface. Anyway, it's a multi-protocol router.
