    Lite-On's '04 Roadmap

Lower-end units typically didn't offer a side-change feature. Mid- and hi-end did. Do, actually, since at least Pioneer still sells 1 DVD/LD combi player. The reason, BTW, for the flip was that a single side of an LD stored either 30 or 60 minutes of video. Since no compression was used...

    Lite-On's '04 Roadmap

Sure. Even my player has a slight pause .. maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a second. But it's not a problem. And it certainly beats the 7 seconds or so it takes to change sides on a laserdisc.

    Lite-On's '04 Roadmap

Many movies are dual-layer. Set-top boxes have no problem with them. I can't say, of course, how the STB will respond to a dual-layer R/RW disc, though. FWIW, I'm perfectly happy with my new burner. Pioneer 106 4x. No coasters so far after burning about 8 or 10 fairly full data discs.

I don't know Intel & Crucial part #s. Can you detail what the CPU is and how much RAM you added? How will the disks be managed? You mentioned 360 GB so I'm assuming RAID5. What are your partition plans?

    Peachtree Accounting blows

Last year was my first time entering mortgage info so I know how you feel. I get to deal with a refi this year. The tax packages handle mortgage stuff just fine. TT, TaxCut, etc. will all take the mortgage form you'll get from your mortgage holder. The web form should as well if still want...

So, uh, is it actually supposed to do something? I click SpelCheck (is it a bad sign that Spel is not spelled correctly?). I make a couple of corrections to typos. I click "Finish Checking" (shouldn't that be "Finished"?) and the pop-up window flashes something too fast to read and goes...

Well, I'd definitely avoid anything from Intuit. Their product activation scheme and practically forced upgrades for Quicken users are simply disgusting. I have my budget in an Excel spreadsheet and even that's overkill.

    The flu sucks :(

I got my every-few-years 24 hour flu yesterday. It started with a dull headache. You know how a sinus headache is towards the front of your head? Well, this was just behind it. So not sinus but not an 'average' headache. Then came the diarrhea. Yuck. Never pleasant but when you're at work...

    SR Dead?

I, too, financially supported SR during it's time of need. At the time it was a great site for all things storage and I really enjoyed the forums. As I do here, I read more than I posted so my post count never got to be that high. Sure, there were threads to ignore here and there, and the...

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

Hmm. Questions: Can you uninstall them from teh machine, including clearing them from Dev Mgr and then re-add them? Are they on the same IDE cable? (master/slave jumpers good?) Do they show in the BIOS? Have they always been like that or did the problem just start? Is the PC current...

    Coffee

2-3 cups a day. Sometimes 4. I haven't had any yet today. For home we buy 8 O'Clock beans, 1/2-caff variety, for home. At work I'll do 1-2 cups w/caff then switch to decaf. The work-supplied coffee isn't very good, though, so I buy my own decaf from Sams (Folgers) and make it. There...

    [NEWS] - Farewell Win98

My wife's PC is 98. I dread re-installing everything to move her to 2K or XP so I'll probably just stick with it and make sure her AV & firewalls stay current. Since she has no outstanding problems, I think the real 'forced upgrade' will occur when she wants an app that doesn't support 98. Of...

    RIP MSI YMFPOS

While it sounds like the capacitors are shot, here's a couple of other things to try: 1. Replace the keyboard (just in case there's a key stuck or something). 2. For testing, underclock the CPU & RAM. Take the 1.2GHz to 1GHz and the RAM from PC133 to PC100.

Best DVD Burner for less than $200.

I had 5.5.something, OEM from my LiteOn CD-RW. I added the Pioneer DVD burner and installed 5.5.somethingnewer and instead of adding Pioneer support it upgraded (perhaps updated is a better term) my LiteOn support to the somethingnewer release. Ahead, it appears, not only linked to the most...

    Photosystem for an Optical Shop

I agree on the cost of the color laser vs. B&W laser + photo printer. I think the problem with that is that the clerk will be constantly inserting & removing the media to transfer it from cam to printer & back. It seems a cam with a constant PC connection would be better. As I mentioned...

How about photo quality? A still from a good webcam might be sufficient. Or would a photo from a 2+MP camera be better? I know my Canon PowerShot G1 can be left connected to a PC and have the photos automatically go there instead of having to download from the camera to the PC. But to...

    Return of the king

Saw it Friday. When it started, and there were those scenes with slo-mo, I was wondering if the whole movie would be only 90 minutes at normal speed. :x But then it picked up. I had no problem with the ending of the film. Unlike many films, it actually brought closure to the story. Most...

No followup from Ahead technical non-support so far. A friend purchased Nero 5.x some time ago and has offered his s/n as a solution. If Ahead doesn't fix the problem soon I will go that route. I see it as remaining legal as the software will still only be used with drives that came with Nero...

It was both good and bad for us. The gift side was good: DVD-RW, HD, RAM, some books, a basic RC car, a framed MC Escher print, and a couple of gift cards. I've also been on vacation from work since the 19th. The family side wasn't good: My uncle-inlaw (Wife's father's younger brother) had...

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

AMD CPUs are rated for 95C. I have no problem running them at anything up to 65C. The cooler the better, of course, but I'm not sweating the details if the CPU runs 65C or less; that's way below the thermal threshold.
