Palm OS 5.2, BLazer 3.0, no Office doc handler yet but will likely get DataViz Docs2Go at some point. The RAM was really to store PDFs, MP3s, etc. I've already loaded 69MB of PDFs (the Adobe converter sucks, BTW). I actually haven't loaded an MP3 player yet, but will sometime. I did, though...

    The united states Economy

The problem is that merchants don't know and don't want to know what is allowed where. So even though the literature and encryption products may be allowed somewhere, the merchants don't necessarily know that and don't have systems in place to ensure things are only sent where they're...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

So now it's no longer a media server? Is a game server in need of a TB of disk? I think you're getting OT. I think we should concentrate on what makes a good storage server for A/V or whatever other use we want. If you want to provide info about additional uses, add side-bars or better yet...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

Well, if it can handle a couple of video stream, handling several more audio-only streams should be a piece of cake unless the disks have to do a lot more seeking. Even then, system RAM/caching should alleviate that.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

My vote is for an A/V server capable of 2-3 simul video playbacks @ DVD quality over Ethernet (not through video-out). Capable initially of storing the equivalent of, say, 300 DVDs but expandableto 1500 or so. (My current collection is probably in the 650-700 disc range) What other servers do...

    IE to Suck Less

Or the pr0n model... For the non-adult site, how much free content will be provided to entice users to pay? How to convince people you're worth paying for? What percentage of sites that try this model fail? In all of my years on the net I've never joined a pay-for-play site. I donated to SR...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

<laugh> I used to run a 10MB Ether server with ~40 users on a 486/50MHz with maybe 32MB RAM. Even then, the CPU stayed under 10% busy pretty much all the time. Of course, that was Netware. Really, the cheapest of the cheap CPUs should be more than adequate for any modest workgroup server if...

[NEWS] - Building a budget storage server

What's wrong with that? It'll only take about 200 discs and a solid day (if no time is wasted) to back it up. Plus a few more for the boot drive. Oh, that's per backup set. Add more discs if you grandfather / father / son your backups.

    Review of new Toyota Prius

My gut feel is that it serves three purposes: 1. Gives Toyota an outlet for edgier designs. Scions definitely are polarizing, unlike pretty much everything else from Toyota (which mostly screams "Bland!"). Toyota doesn't tend to use radical styling; with Scion they can. 2. Allows Toyota to...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

The storage server/NAS goes in the basement on it's own UPS. Day-to-day management, if any, goes through TSE/VNC/whatever. Media loading would be copied over the network from my main PC in the den or maybe through the HTPC. It can be as loud as it needs to be; it's competing with the freezer...

Figuring out the graphic card universe...need for a database

When I speced my laptop about 18 months ago, I had 2 choices for the video: 32 or 64MB RAM. All things considered I stuck with 32 as I saw no need for 64MB. Even running dual 1600x1200x32 bit screens as I current do it is more than enough. GF4 440 Go chipset, BTW. The strange thing is when I...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

I think this is a valid point and needs some further discussion. Are talking a storage server that can dish out lots of sustained video streams, something serving AutoCAD files, something that needs a lot of capacity but not much bandwidth, or what? Really, what you build will depend on it's...

... along with many of the web sites that advertising supports. I agree popups are evil and don't add value, but well-placed, targeted ads within a page are acceptable to me as a compromise since it keeps the content free. Out of curiosity, what do you expect will take the place of the ads to...

    Inwall Speakers

I forgot to comment earlier. I agree with this philosophy as speakers (and most other mid- to high-end AV gear) can have discernable differences in performance based on the acoustics & layout of the room they're in. I auditioned my Denon AVR-5700 receiver at United Audio (now Tweeter) but used...

Suggestions, some of which will cost: - Put the slave drive in a tray and dismount it when no master is present. If your access needs support that. Or flip it between master & slave and insert it into whichever slot is appropriate. - Put the slave in a USB2/Firewire enclosure and remove it...

[NEWS] - Building a budget storage server

I read it yesterday after seeing it linked from Anand's. It's really an app server with lots of space. Otherwise, why would a NAS-type box actually need a P4 3GHz? On the cost & config: - They didn't really cut corners. Beefy PCP&C PSU, for instance. - But it doesn't include any software...

Any local shops you'd recommend hitting? Tweeter may be OK, but I'd like more variety. A friend suggested Saturday Audio (or something like that) but I haven't been to their store yet. It's only open on Saturdays... Very strongly agree. While the idea of everything from a single source...

Figuring out the graphic card universe...need for a database

An interesting side bar to such a list would be the comparative performance of current laptop graphics chips. I don't think it'd necessarily have to be in the main database since laptop graphics aren't generally replaceable, but it'd be nice to know if a certain chipset is sufficient for some...

I'll add to Pradeep's comments about price and mention that a reader shouldn't cost more than just a few $. A few months ago I got a Dazzle 6-in-1 for $8 shipped after rebate. $28 before. It's not USB2 but for the price it's great.

    - The stock market is, as usual, rising too quickly. This will bring about another correction, although probably nowhere near as severe as in '01. I think a Dow of 8700-9200 is reasonable, but beyond that it seems to be overvalued. (I like what my 401(k) is doing as much as the next guy, but...

So, with dual-layers maybe being available in 6 or so months, any guess on the price premium? I've been on the edge of buying either the Sony or Pioneer 4x for a little while now, but the idea of dual-layer, well, really the idea of 2x the storage, is rather tempting. My use is for data...

Scsi Perf. issue & W2k Server

Most mid- to high-end iSeries nowadays easily outgun a mainframe (zSeries) in terms of raw MIPS. The mainframe is still a little more stable and has some cool partitioning that the 400 doesn't have just yet, but at this point a decision between the two would boil down to what your apps run on...

Digital cameras?? Best company track record?

Regarding using readers, up until recently, we hooked up the camera to the PC instead of using a reader. My reasoning was that with 1GB of capacity, we never actually filled the microdrive and as such there was never any reason to pull the unit out of the camera. We just left it in all the...

Need to Configure a new Server

I've speced PE2650s with 4 36GB 15K drives so that particular chassis has no problem from a power & heat standpoint. I haven't dealt with RAID 10 or 50 so I can't comment on them. Every setup I've dealt with has been either mirrored or RAID5. We use RAID5 on our AS/400s; one of my machines...

While I'm not super-fond of the bundled software, I'll toss another vote for Canon. I've had a PowerShot G1 for some time now. Need to Configure a new Server

Regarding the RAID5, with just 17 users I doubt it'd be a performance drain. The type of workload you're describing sounds like about 60-80% read; 20-40% write. RAID5 will be fine in that environment if you choose to use it. On the servers we use at work, we've standardized on a mirrored set...
