If I'm not using this RAID array for my OS, what is the advantage to using the Intel drivers?
The Intel software doesn't give me the option of creating a RAID array. I was wondering if this is because all disks are basic disks, but I ran across this in the help section of the Intel Rapid...
Hey guys,
I'm re-doing my backup scheme. The first layer of protection I want is a mirrored data drive (RAID 1). I've never created a RAID array, and I'm a little confused.
I have two identical Hitachi 7k2000s, both are currently basic disks, one contains my data and the other contains junk. My...
There's a gene for overpriced motherboards now?! Give that all boards with this gene use the name "Rampage" I assume it's a dominant gene. My current board is also an Asus (P8P67 Pro), so should I get my PC tested for this gene? Or do I already know that my board is at least a carrier based on...
Hey Gang,
I'm futzing with my HTPC after it's HD died (WD 20EARS, 7 months old). One thing that's always bothered me is that logging on remotely using my main desktop computer via my LAN kicks off the HTPC "user", who must then click on the logon icon to get back the session - which is hard to...
Ended up getting a cheap 23" 1920x1080 - a Dell R2320L, $180. I'm relatively happy with it, although I wish it were not so short. Now I just wish Windows would let me play a full screen movie on one monitor and not blank the other.
Would be nice if I could find a cheap widescreen that I could rotate to make portrait rather than landscape; all the stands I've seen recently make that impossible.
Well, the 19" monitor in question is now starting to die. It will occasionally act like I cycled the power. Any current suggestions? My uses are still as described above.
I love my 80 GB X25-M G2, and am thinking about my next SSD. I'd prefer something around 120 GB, but reviews typically focus on the large (e.g 240 GB) drives, and I've seen/heard how smaller versions tend to perform worse than larger drives. If anybody knows how to "convert" performance results...
I have a Scythe Kaze master something or other. It gives me up to 6 temperature readouts and 6 manual fan controls. Temperature readouts are interesting to peek at now and them when I'm doing something intense with my computer, but not really useful. I almost never adjust fan speed as I set all...
I have an extra copy of Windows 7 I can use, although on this device I wonder if Windows XP would run better. This is the ZG5: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Aspire_One
Went with the Samsung that Time suggested. Seemed like a good balance of performance, low power consumption, and space. We'll see how horrible the microsurgery is, and I'll have to figure out how to re-install Windows.
My wife says that size is such an issue for her, she would prefer her Netbook to even a 1" thick midrange notebook. We're leaning towards an SSD. Any reason a standard 2.5" SSD such as those recommended wouldn't fit in a netbook? I have never opened one.
My wife says nothing.
I just have a hard time justifying spending $100-150 on a netbook. I'm asking the wife if we should just put that towards a real, albeit low-end, laptop.
What are you guys recommended these days for replacement hard drives for netbooks? My wife's Aspire One, now 2.5 years old, just makes a sickening click noise during POST and the BIOS reports no media found. I haven't done any further diagnostics but I'm guessing the hard drive is toast. She's...
Decided it was easier in the end to just move my 1+TB of data to another drive I cleaned out, format the disk, and move the stuff back. Took about 1.5 hours each way, and 3 hours total.
My understanding is tha this $1 billion mistake was the result of one engineer making a late change to the board after most testing was complete. I wonder if she/he still has a job.
I'm in the same boat. I made what in retrospect was a good decision almost 2 years ago and it's served me very well. In the 2 years prior to that drive I probably had 3 drives that I felt were just crummy and a pain to use. I'd like to find another reliable USB drive, preferably 16+ GB and USB3...
Do you guys see computer naive people getting netbooks for college-bound kids these days when they really need a true, albeit low-end, laptop? I wonder how many parents/relatives don't know the difference other than ~$400.
My main PC is in a Coolermaster Haf-X, so I could get a third hot swap tray (the one in the link above) and rotate backup hard drives in/out to run the "backup to my shelf" approach that Merc seemed to like.
I can adjust the boot menu, no problem. I just want to get rid of the folders Windows creates (Windows, users, programs, etc). I have other stuff on those drives that I want to keep and no convenient place to put it while I format the drive over. And I can't just delete the Windows folder as my...
Hey Gang,
I had previously installed two copies of Windows 7 on my main PC as a form of "backup OS" that I no longer want to have around. My main OS is Windows 7 as well. Is there an easy way to delete these two versions, each of which is on a different hard drive (and my main OS is on another)?
I've been using this SanDisk Cruzer for the past 1.5 years - http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Micro-Flash-SDCZ6-8192-A11/dp/B000UZN2ZK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1303500240&sr=8-4. I like it because I can put a big lanyard on the back keyring to make it harder to loose and the cap is...
Yeah, not interested in a toaster.
I'm debating what I should be doing for backups. I' have a little <1 TB, but that amount is growing quickly as I've started to shoot some video. I'm debating between a cloud service and a home-built system. Right now my main data drive, which includes my...
OK, USB 3 is here and my PC is equipped. Anybody have an external enclosure that doesn't suck? I'd love something with USB 3, USB 2, eSATA, Firewire, gigabit ethernet, and Wifi-N, but I'd settle for just decent USB2/3.
With Datram's RAMDisk I can tell it to load an image from my mechanical HD when I start it up, and to save it to the mechanical HD when I turn it off. It will even save an image every X seconds. My machine has 16 GB of RAM, and I've got it setup now to create a 6 GB RAMDisk that has a Linux Mint...
Anybody have experience with creating and using RAM disks? I recently found Dataram's ramdisk (free for <=4 GB) (link: http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk). Has a nice GUI, seems to work reasonably well. I've been playing around with creating Linux virtual machines...
An Intel 320, 120 GB for $230. Not exactly cheap, but something I'm eyeing since my 80 GB X25-MG2 is starting to feel small.

Over the weekend I successfully re-installed my old Sound Card. I guess uninstalling the software and re-installing it did the trick.
I still wonder why my Raptor isn't usable on the Marvel controller, though. Perhaps a driver re-install would do the trick? Although now I've got the ports...
Indeed, posted in the wrong thread. My bad.
Was joking about the no-reboot-CPU-swap thing. Although, I seem to recall a long while ago that some very large multi-CPU system was designed to allow different CPUs to be shut down and swapped.
I did simply swap everything. Unfortunately, I've...
wow, just found that in the box they included an HS-101 notebook headset along with a PS on the bottom of the letter explaining that they hope I accept them as a token of appreciation. Not sure if it's crap or not, but I appreciate the gesture.
Just got my replacement board from Asus today, along with an email and FedEx instructions. It only took them 5-6 days to get me the board after faxing in the form for the credit card hold. Not bad.
I think I may have just been bitten by the bug. Came home from work this morning, computer was frozen. This rarely happens, but as mentioned elsewhere, I've been playing with some new programs (Dexpot). Computer would take forever in the BIOS to get to my boot menu, and Windows wouldn't boot...
Interesting.
I can see why some data would need to be stored in an unalterable format for accountability purposes, but would that data really be sensitive and need to be kept secret? Would terrorists care when a reactor was shut down for maintenance, for example. I guess if the maintenance...
I run two monitors, and Dexpot works fine.
I don't actually run that many applications, but it's nice running each virtual machine in a maximized window on its own desktop. Dexpot then lets me easily cycle through desktops.
