Huh? I thought Windows 2000 was designed for networking

i've setup a winNT and 2k domain controller, but never knew how to configure them as such properly... (if you read my post carefully i *did* say "non domain") I find with only a few computers and users that it doesn't make much sense to dedicate a machine for domain controlling.. but perhaps...

Verisign takes wildcard on .com and .net domains

I noticed this about a week ago... if you type in an invlalid domain you get to verisign's "site finder" page. Anyone else notice this? http://www.this-is-not-a-site.com http://www.this-also-aint-no-freakin-site.com This is aparently related to verisign taking up the wildcard on the .com and...

Cable & Wireless not present in Québec/Canada?

hey man, if you can't trust the employees... that's one thing I see wrong with alot of emplyees. They have the mentality of "what can your company do for me?" and not "Here's what I can do for your company."

Yet another reason to like Autralia

does anyone realize that if we breed for inteligence then we'll just end up raising the average intelligence... there will still be reletively stupid people and the "bar" will have to be rasied... this would keep happenning forever... I like the population based theory.. I don't think we need...

    Kazaa Lite ++

i've used edonkey for wuite awhile and find that as merc has it's the best place to find high quality videos. Audio is still a pain. The problem I have with the network is that it's often very slow compared to fastrack. If you want a video, expect it to take a couple of days to a week of being...

    Bug in MS Paint

if im correct, I believe the thumbs.db file is only created when one opens the folder in thumbnail view (either when saving/opening a file or when viewing in explorer/my computer). couple thing on my mind.. paint uses the bmp format by default and might be creating a huge file that's taking a...

Huh? I thought Windows 2000 was designed for networking

The deny actions simply take precidence over the allow actions Tea.. so if the "everyone" group (everyone in winNT is an alias to the users group and not anonymous by default) is denied then you are denying all users... this takes precidence over the allow. I'm surprised you were not aware of...

    When RAI5 is not enough

as for a safe number.. i'd say 5 without a hot spare.. with a hot spare i see no problem for 10. If you need more redundancy get RAID 10 or 50 with spares.

    When RAI5 is not enough

That sounds like it would be terribly slow at writes... 2 sets of parity information instead of a single set... knowing all the read/writes that are normally done with raid5 in order to calculate and store parity info this would be bad. Well... I'm guessing that it's actually the same parity...

    Zip files....drawbacks?

i use NTFS compression on my backup/bulk storage drive. it atleast effectively eliminates the excess space used by slack, most things on the drive are not compressable as they are already compressed archives/files.

    Zip files....drawbacks?

one downside to zip files seems to be their inability to get over 2GB using some zip rograms... the windows ME/XP zip integration comes to mind as well as some of the free zip programs i've tried.. I've never tried to make a >2GB zip archive using pkzip or winzip.

like I said before, more RAM doesn't usually make a game faster.. just like system RAM, you'll notice a point where it doesn't make things run any faster.. That point depends on the game and the level(or in this instance the dekstop and its theme along with what programs are open). 64MB is still...

    Defrag program....does it matter?

i used to use diskeeper 7 (the 1st version) and previous diskeeper versions becasue it was faster than windows 2k/XP defrag and let me defrag multiple drives simultaneously. But lately I've just used the built in XP defragger because I think it does a better overall job and is probably less...

i dont think most people know what video RAM even does... they just see more and think it's automatically better. More RAM typically does not make a card faster. It only helps if your card is out of RAM and has to keep fetching textures from the system RAM, or ::shudder:: the hard drive. The...

In every version of MMC I've ran the volume control controlled the mixer on the soundcard(vid card doesn't matter), perhaps you have the MMC software set to use the wrong input for the sound card or you have the wrong input source selected in the mixer. really? i never had a responsiveness problem with NT 4.0 SP4 or below on a 486 66MHz CPU... as long as you don't run out of RAM you're fine (I think pre SP6 and with no defragger the system use less than 24MB on boot).
