    Paid antivirus

That's the reason I ditched Avira for Avast! I will resurrect an Athlon 3400+ to see how a custom install of Avast! works. Probably doesn't need all the "shields" and other security "products" installed.

    Dead SCSI Drive

Thread necro. I had the need to use ViVard again over the weekend. A computer wasn't backed up and the disk had developed a couple of bad sectors. Macrium couldn't clone or image the drive as the bad sectors caused a read disk failure. Telling Macrium to ignore file system errors didn't...

Good HD Setup for a small office server

Don't bother with RAID for your boot/OS drive. Get all your OS/applications installed and configured. Take a snapshot with Macrium Reflect or something similar. Copy the image to your data drive/RAID solution and to something portable that you can take offsite. Redundancy is great. Redundancy...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

Are you asking if anyone has tried Cyanogen 10.1? Or Cyanogen 10.1 on an S4? If the former, I'm running an unofficial Cyanogen 10.1 on my Incredible S. I linked to the ROM in one of my previous posts. My S4 I will leave at stock for a little while longer (maybe when the year is up) before I...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

One nice thing about Cyanogen is the stock performance utilities were you can do things like overclock your phone. The Snapdragon S2 is specced for clocks up to 1.4 GHz, which makes the 1 GHz clock in the Incredible S seem rather conservative. I've been running the clock @ 1.2 GHz for the...

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

I've tried Firefox on my Incredible S (Single core Snapdragon S2 1GHz) and it's too slow compared to the default Webkit or Chrome. Chrome is the best on this device. On any dual core chips or better it works a treat.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

O.K. Was rocking a HTC Incredible S for two years, and then upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S4, primarily for the bigger screen - I read books and PDF's a lot. The SGS4 is much better for web browsing as well. After a few weeks, I thought "hey, this phone doesn't feel much faster than the Inc...

    question Which Tablets

I swapped from an Incredible S to a Galaxy S4 because I read a lot on my phone, and I like the bigger screen. Still thinking the new Nexus might be my first tablet though. Plus, I can now put Jellybean on the Incredible S. Not bad for a phone that started out with Froyo (2.2).

SSDs - State of the Product?

I just replaced my 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 with a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro. Made no perceptible difference speed wise in general use. Benchmarks indicate that the Samsung should be at least twice as fast as the OCZ, but I can't see it. If anything, returning from resume feels a little slower. A...

    Windows 8.1

I understand your issue vis a vis support. My issue though isn't with support. Why are people turning to alternate shells, in numbers that are causing your support headaches? If there was nothing wrong with the standard interface, people wouldn't be searching out alternates in such numbers...

    Windows 8.1

Seriously, why do we need a common UI? If you have a Windows (pre Win 8) computer and an iPhone or Android phone, did you have crippling issues dealing with UI differences? People adapt and learn. I get it that Microsoft are trying to leverage their installed base to get a leg up in the...

    Windows 8.1

Given the sales figures, or lack of, it would appear that Windows 8 is a failure. Certainly if you measure success via Windows 7/XP. The question is why? And given the sheer number of replacement/overlay shells, then the Modern UI is not doing Win8 any favours. Is it the default? Yes. Can...

    Windows 8.1

Because if there isn't a debate, Microsoft, Google or whoever will assume that what they are doing is fine. Vista was a raging success. Oh, wait. It wasn't. And people bagged it mercilessly. But that debate lead to Windows 7 which was a definite success. Windows 8 on the other hand is, or...

    Windows 8.1

You like it - fine. It isn't about "getting over it". For my working style it's just plain inefficient. I like the minimum if clicks/keystrokes to get a task done. Scrolling, tabbing, clicking and nesting which is the direction MS has headed in works for for some. Control Panel is an...

    Intel vs AMD

My HTPC which has done sterling business is an E8400 + GA-G33M-DS2R + Radeon 5670 was giving me grief so I started investigating options for replacing it. I wanted to use the 65W AMD APUs, like the A10 5700/6700 - except the 65W parts have never been available in Aus. If you don't sell 'em...

I like some of the new stuff in Win8. But I don't like the new things enough to overcome my dislike of the Modern interface. Sh!te, if I wanted a screen full of individual icons to programs I could always re-install Windows 3.1. And at least Windows 3.1 it was easier to group them! It's like...

FreeNAS and ZFS on old hardware

My understanding is that ZFS needs gobs of memory for the the caching, block lists CRC and such. This is why it is robust and you can do things like dedup. My question is why you want to use ZFS on something that looks like a single volume? Why not just use CIFS/SMB? On a single drive you can...

    Intel vs AMD

And back on topic, I am thinking of an AMD 8320 build at the moment. But it will be used as a VMware box, so it's a specific use-case. In this case, the AMD build should work out significantly cheaper than a VT-d enabled Intel build. Even finding all the requisite parts for a IOMMU support on...

Given that Haswell is at best, 5 to 15% faster than Ivy Bridge, and in a lot of cases only a little bit better than Sandy Bridge, you can extrapolate from any Sandy/Ivy article. Just go a model down compared to the previous gen or two. Multi-threaded performance shows the most gain. Single...

    Windows 8

I don't think you can separate Win8 and Metro. I agree that Apple chose their niche very well, but Microsoft is still trying to be jack-of-all-trades, whilst attempting to push Metro/Windows store. As a result, it's doing none of the things well, and it's pissing people off. And I'm not sure...

I don't think there is anything wrong with Tannin's analysis. Nor your's Howell. The question is, can Microsoft sell to the same niche as Apple, and charge the same prices in a fragmented market (Apple, Android, Windows)? I don't think they can. And why did I drag Android into this? Because...
