    How far do you go?

I'm as forthright as they come, but sometimes you get a computer that looks like it has a routine infection but it turns out to be the tip of the iceberg. Fix one thing and then three other problems appear. I explain to my "slow computer" clients that this might be the case and that the hours...

    How far do you go?

Client's machine. You've disinfected, pared down the startup list, pruned the registry and streamlined the services. But the machine still crawls. Something still lurks beneath the surface, mocking you. You've reached your reasonable rate cap. A few more hours and the client may as well buy a...

    XP Explorer: Drive Comments?

Right. Other than renaming it. I name all my volumes, but I just noticed that one of the sorting columns available in My Computer is "Comments". With files it's easy to add a comment. With drives, there seems to be no way, but the field is available, making me wonder if I've missed something.

SIM Card Readers: Is There A Difference?

I want to get a SIM card reader to play with but I'm confused by the huge spread in prices; anywhere from $1.50 to $100. Is there a qualitative difference here? Are there specific features I should be looking for that aren't available on the cheaper models?

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

OK, found the micro switches on eBay (item number 130184547565). Hopefully the seller will ship to J-lem. In the meantime I swapped the left- and right-click switches so that I can continue more-or-less using the mouse. Call me crazy but I really like the idea of repairing my old shit instead...

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

The best way to get stuff over here is the buddy courier system, i.e. I have a parcel shipped to a friend in the States or Canada who's coming to Israel and they bring it here for me. That said, one of my Israeli suppliers has the mouse for the equivalent of about $19— same price for white...

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

Yeah... I'm in Israel. I'd have to find a mule and right now I can't think of anyone coming in from the states. My sister is coming from Toronto but my supplier no longer sells the Intellimouse Optical and there's no way in heaven I'm buying a retail-packaged mouse so I'll have to think of some...

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

Here we go again Less than two years has passed since I replaced the switches in this rodent and they are already misfiring. Clearly mine is not a reliable sample set but it would seem that the part with the MS-specific part number was rated for three times the cycles as the generic part...

Change input language - keystroke conflicts

I started this thread when I got frustrated during a particularly grueling job in Illustrator, where I was constantly using the ALT+SHIFT combo to constrain and copy while dragging and also doing a fair bit of typing in both Hebrew and English. The ALT+SHIFT motion is so ingrained in me and so...

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

P.s. I left my CoolPix 4500 unattended the other night (at a wedding, of all places) and it wandered off, probably with some floozy. Guess it had enough of my arm's-length self portraits. I'm sure it'll call in the morning once it sobers up and realizes what a mistake it's made... right? At...

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

Yeah, I see what you mean... Sigma seems to have erred on the side of caution, leaving untapped potential in the images to be brought out by further processing. Still, I want my 6400ISO.

Yeah, just noticed that one, too. Looks nifty. Love that they stuck a prime on it. Can't wait to see how sharp it is. I'd be really interested to see more lenses with multiple, discreet focal length stops like the Leica Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21. Something like that can be optimized for the best...

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

I'll tell ya, I flipped through the sample gallery on the DP1 mini-site and wasn't floored. In a gallery of 37 photos only 2 are at ISOs higher than 100. One is at 400 and the other at 800 and in both grain is clearly visible. It's not *killing* me but it's there. Jaggies are clearly visible in...

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

But clean images at high ISO is my top priority for this theoretical camera. What better way to achieve that than with big-ass pixel sites? I'm talking happy snaps, here. Party photos for Fakebook— er, Faecesbook— oh, dammit, what's the name again? Anyway, I could care less about prints for...

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

I was just dreaming about a point & shoot camera that trades pixel count for super-clean, super-high ISOs. With today's sensor and DSP technology this would be a breeze. The Nikon D3's sensor and processor combo can produce an incredibly clean image at 6400 ISO. Arguably the best available...
