    10 gig Ethernet

This switch could be interesting... Get a two SFP+ 10gig card for the NAS/server. Connect one SFP+ port to the Mikrotik switch and the SFP+ other port directly to the backup server (which has its own one SFP+ 10gig card). That would give 10gig between the two servers, 10gig from the...

    10 gig Ethernet

Anyone running 10GbE at home or played with it at work? In my case I'm thinking to connect my backup server to my new NAS via 10GbE. Is it really as simple as buying two Mellanox Connectx-2 cards for under $20 a piece and a few meter Twinax SFP+ for under $20 and being in business?

    Proposed NAS build

I did some IOmeter tests with the two 6TB Toshiba drives in RAID-1 on the ASRock Rack mobo with the Xeon. I'll post the results later, but they're lower than what I got in my Z87 motherboard with i7-4770k (not currently overclocked). I used a newer driver revision, and there are two links...

    Proposed NAS build

Yeah, I was wondering about 10GbE last night and this morning. Specifically adding it via a PCIe card to both new NAS/server and my backup server. Then I got to thinking about having a 10 gig link between the gigabit switch and the new NAS/server as well. Nothing like looking into it after...

ECC RAM (v. how do I know it's working?)

I got 5 on the system, so I guess it's all working.

    Proposed NAS build

Well, it's the onboard graphics of a server class board. It isn't intended for anything more than checking in on the system, not actual use. I also noticed the OS/HW doesn't seem to support sleep/standby/S3 either, but I need to double check that. I disabled hibernation support and got back...

    Something Random

I suspect the poor performance is intentional so people will get frustrated and be more inclined to migrate to Windows 10. Windows XP had similar issues with Windows Update near the end of its life. Of course Windows 7 has several years to go...

So this worked... Other people on Hardforum reported the same issue with Windows Update churning endlessly. It's probably best to install IE 11 first so you don't bother installing a bunch of useless updates for IE 8. Also, it's probably a decent idea to install the updates in small batches...

    Proposed NAS build

I'll admit I was thinking about it. I found a thread on Hardforum where other people were having the same problem I was. Based on the posts the single KB3102810 seems to be the fix, which is what's currently running installing updates. So, fingers crossed... I've held one in my hands before...

I ran about 25 hours of Memtest86+ without any issues. I would have run it longer, but I wanted to get started on Windows 7 and test the Pro key I bought. What a mess that turned into. :( It felt a little strange to have order a sound card for my server since it lacks any sort of onboard...

At the rate I'm going I'll be lucky if I can even get Windows 7 Pro installed. I'm on my 4th clean install. :cursin: Install #1: I got Windows 7 Home Premium because the tool to make the USB key from the .ISO didn't honor the flag in the filesystem to remove the ei.cfg file from ISO. Instead...

The price was right on a Windows 7 Pro license. Also trying to eliminate variables when getting the machine up and running since I know 7 much better than 10. However, I was thinking to put Windows 10 on it before putting it into service.

    Something Random

So after spending most of the night trying to clean install Windows 7 Pro SP1 on a system I have nothing but hostile thoughts about Microsoft. Windows Update won't work unless you manually install a KB patch which requires ending several processes before that will even install. After that the...

ECC RAM (v. how do I know it's working?)

Okay, I'll look into those later. Right now the "system" has no drives connected to it. It's just a motherboard w/ RAM and a CPU sitting outside a case aka ddrueding style. I know I can use a LiveUSB instead. I'll do that after I'm happy with the length and duration of my memtest86+ test...

ECC RAM (v. how do I know it's working?)

So, I have 32gB of Crucial DDR3-1600L RAM (4 x 8gB EUDIMMs), an Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3 processor, and a motherboard with an Intel C224 chipset (ASRock Rack E3C224). They all support ECC, so how do I tell if it's actually working? The SPD for the memory proudly says it's ECC. I don't see any...

WTB: 240pin DDR2-800 2x2GB DIMMs (not AMD only / "high density")

My quick searching Google for Crucial Ballistix 4gB (2 x 2gB) CL4 kits that were sold years ago doesn't turn up any AMD only stuff. It looks like the lowest voltage CL4 4GB kits they sold are 2.0V. It also seems that they sold 2.2V kits too.

The i5-4590 has been returned and a E3-1231 v3 is now sitting in my car. My ECC DDR3-1600L should arrive today so I will have enough to start my build and testing. I'm going to start on the RAM with memtest86+.

WTB: 240pin DDR2-800 2x2GB DIMMs (not AMD only / "high density")

I think 2gB sticks that are single sided are AMD only. Do you happen to know the voltage rating/spec of that 4gB set? Is it 1.8-1.9V per chance?

I tried the two Toshiba drives in RAID-1 on the Intel controller in this Z87 based system. I tried two different caching settings the not so safe Write Back and the safer Write Through. They perform much better on the LSI based M5016 controller. Intel RAID-1 Write Through: Intel RAID-1...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

So apparently I didn't do my homework very well. I had been planning to use an i5-4590 for my server. I even bought one from Microcenter. Thankfully it's still sealed in the box. I didn't realize this before but it turns out the Intel disabled ECC in the i5's and above. The Celerons...

    Windows 10

It sure didn't give me the option of downloading 10 Pro when I ran it on one of my i7's running 7 Home Premium. I will have to try it on my Windows 7 Pro laptop later. Any insight on my other question as to whether it's downloading 1511 TH2 or not? Edit: I tried the MCT software on my...

I thought they put it back? Most of the articles I've read say they put it back on Nov 24th. However, when I attempted to use the MCT today I wasn't given any choice of which version to download (beyond 10, 10 home single language, and 10 N). Is that 1511 TH2 or not? Also, how do I get 10...

WTB: 240pin DDR2-800 2x2GB DIMMs (not AMD only / "high density")

Anyone have any 240pin (desktop) DDR2-800 (or faster) DIMMs lying around they'd be willing to sell reasonably cheap? I'm looking for two matched 2gB DIMMs. AMD only "high density" DDR2 won't work for me as this is for an Intel P35 based system. Edit: Four matched 2GB DIMMs totaling 8gB would...

Here are the results on the Intel Controller: And the RAID-1 results again: I don't know the exact reason the drives on the RAID card do so much better at 8K blocks and smaller. Perhaps the controller is combining/grouping the requests and actually accessing the drive in larger blocks.

One more bogus benchmark. I'm currently running my IOmeter "super ATTO" pattern on a single drive connected to the Intel SATA controller on the motherboard (Z87 chipset). It definitely is not giving the flat performance that two of the drives in RAID-1 on the M5016 card did.

I'm still not sure I understand exactly. I used Windows 8.1 on a Celeron 2557U with 8GB of DDR3-1600 and a 250gB Micron BX100 mSATA SSD and it was quick and responsive. I gave the system to my parents to use as their primary computer. Sure, I wouldn't want to use it for any CPU intensive...

Yes, but I presume you saw the post directly above it where I used IOmeter to do the equivalent benchmark and understood from the comment in post 43 that the ATTO benchmark was for lulz. Do you have some example job files that you use that you'd be willing to share / post?

Why does it have 2 PERC 6i cards? With only 8 HDDs you only need 1. Or did it used to have more than 8 HDDs? I'm interested in the two IcyDock MB455SPF-B 5 in 3 SATA Internal Raid Backplanes if you're looking to get rid of them.
